webfact
Songkhla to capture and quarantine stray dogs By The Nation Officials from the Songkhla Livestock Development Office will start rounding up stray dogs from communities in the southern province next month and move them to a quarantine centre in Satun, a senior official said Wednesday. Kitikorn Janephaibul, chief livestock development officer, said the captured dogs would not be put to death as feared by some animal-rights activists, but would be quarantined to monitor their symptoms for six months. After six months, dogs without rabies would be put up for adoption so that they will not have to return to streets. Those that fail to be adopted will remain under care of the Livestock Development Department, Kitikorn said. Animal rights activists have raised concerns that the department would resort to the easy way of rabies control by “setting zero”, that is, killing, all street dogs. Kitikorn said communities in 29 at-risk spots of eight districts in Songkhla have voted in public hearings to have the stray dogs removed. He said officials would start capturing them early next month. Kitikorn said 26 dogs in the southern province have tested positive to rabies this year. bluedoc
Is there a name or an individual called ‘animal rights activist’. If either maybe these or the animal rights activist would like to stump up the cash to keep all the soi, stray and ownerless dogs safe from harm.
