Tourists can't just come and do as they please, says Thai media

A comment piece in influential Thai media Thai Rath has called on the authorities to inform tourists about what is acceptable behavior at important cultural sites.

A parting message in the piece by "Pleuangpayak" rang loud and clear to visitors to the kingdom: "You can't just come and do as you want!"

The article came in the wake of the case of the Serbian couple where a woman was pictured lounging about in a short skirt on a ledge at one of Thailand's most famous attractions - the sacred site of Wat Pra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

The case caused widespread condemnation from Thais online.

The columnist praised crime buster Surachet Hakpan - the deputy commissioner of the tourist police - for taking a personal interesting in the case and hunting down the miscreants who were slapped with fines before they could leave the country.

In a request to the Prime Minister "Pleuangpayak" said that Prayut Chan-ocha should tell all authorities to inform tourists about acceptable behavior according to Thai cultural and social mores.

Tourists must know how to respect Thai ways and not be allowed to get away with bad behavior.

Has anyone seen an actual pic of those Serb tourists at the cophouse when they were booked?

Thai Rath columnist Pleuangpayak said 'Prayut Chan-ocha should tell all authorities to inform tourists about acceptable behavior according to Thai cultural and social mores. . . .

. . . rather like what he demonstrates on a daily basis? Four years and everything would get trashed.

The list of dos and don'ts would be so long that no one would bother to read it.

Tourists and locals get up to unacceptable behaviour all over the world; it's not just Thailand. It's unfortunate that holidaymakers often switch off their brains as soon as they get to their destinations.

do thais just throw words together and hope they mean something ?

surely what the addled speaker meant was:

1) knowing thai ways

2) respecting thai ways

It's unfortunate to see that virtue signalling has found its way into the Thai media.

Expect to see a lot more stories of feigned moral outrage from 2-bit hacks who can't contain their own xenophobia and racism

I'm 100% sure that if I played western music at ear piercing levels all day I'd get a visit from the cops. Whereas if I was Thai....................

Good point it is unusual that we see no pic of 27 of Thailands finest crammed into the frame with the evil doers sitting stone faced at the table.

Hmmn?

They just want tourists to come and sit at theirs beaches, pay extravagant prices for food and not complain.

Better yet, just stay home and send money - problem solved.

I respect the Thai way, if want to do something wrong, illegal or immoral I can just pay a Thai person no problem.

This will get the usual suspects frothing and foaming.

It will be everyone except the white anglo saxons who are to blame for the imaginary problems encountered in thailand especially in the tourist havens.

It is obvious thailand has problems .

These problems are easily outweighed by the cost of living and lifestyle.

If tourists and expats dont like it there is a clear choice

A slight amendment to your post.

Right! I can't take this verbal abuse any longer.....I'm packing my bags!

Obviously they can just do as they please...look at that case of the defecating chinese woman in the taxi yesterday...even the police said he couldn't do anything about it since there was no law against it.

I thought this thread was about pooping in taxis.

I'll bet you're one of these - an Anglo Saxon!

Make sure when you pack your bags to put all the valuable stuff in last - it helps the baggage handlers. Must respect Thai Ways...

This place is slowly deteriorating into a xenophobic haven. I am also pretty sure one of the images he is holding up is of Thai people walking on sacred temples.

I can't believe they can't let this story about the Serbian couple go. What really irritates me is this whole issue could have been saved if someone had just said to them, ''You can't sit there''. Case closed.

But no, this story has to drag on and on through social media with all this fake outrage is utterly pathetic.

How about using your time to try and really rectify the issues here, ie - having the most roads death in the entire WORLD.

Please wear traditional costumes on Wednesday as well and don't forget to say "ah Ho".

In Lawless Thailand this news story is laughable. To quote the good book "let he who is without sin, cast the first stone"... :post-4641-1156693976:

The majority of Thais flout the law on a daily basis. They have zero regard for rules & regulations as they know they are not rigorously enforced by the police, and any infraction has minor consequences..

If it wasn't for tourism, Thailand would be less developed. How quickly they forget...

Don't bite the hand that feeds you.....

Thailand has more than 30 million tourists yearly.....Very few misbehave....but are featured on Thai social media as 'typical' and creates an outrage among poorly educated Thai's...

Sadly in 2018 xenophobia is alive and well in the Kingdom.....And is actually getting worse....thanks to the dinosaurs in charge
