Israeli military and intelligence officials have reportedly been shocked by how quickly Iran has rebuilt parts of its military capability after the opening phase of the 2026 war. The speed of Tehran’s recovery is raising fresh questions over whether strikes can permanently suppress its missile threat.

Iran’s arsenal is rebuilding faster than expected

According to the Jerusalem Post, Israeli officials were surprised by Iran’s ability to reconstitute its ballistic missile forces after the fighting began. Estimates cited by the paper put Iran’s arsenal at about 1,300 missiles in June 2025, rising to roughly 2,500 by February 2026.

Senior Iranian officials have reportedly claimed that new weapons are now being produced faster than expected. US intelligence reached a similar conclusion, with four officials telling CNN in May that Tehran was beating previously forecast timelines for rebuilding its capabilities.

China link adds another pressure point

US assessments had previously suggested Iran could restore its drone attack capability within six months. Two sources told CNN that China had continued supplying components used in missile production, although a US blockade of Iranian ports may have disrupted those flows.

The development matters because rebuilding a missile force is not simply about replacing launchers and warheads. A sustained production pipeline can allow Iran to absorb losses and preserve its ability to threaten Israel and targets across the region.

Washington faces a missile stockpile problem

The pressure is not falling entirely on Tehran. US precision-missile stocks have also been depleted during the conflict, with Reuters reporting that Washington has used virtually all of its ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles.

If Donald Trump orders another major campaign against Iran, the shortage could force the US towards more dangerous manned bombing missions.

Israel insists Iran has been badly weakened

The IDF pushed back against the reported concerns, saying it had substantially damaged a wide range of Iranian military capabilities and reduced Tehran’s ability to restore them at their previous scale and speed.

But Israel also acknowledged that Iranian reconstruction is being monitored continuously. The central question now is whether Tehran can rebuild faster than Israel and the US can destroy — turning the conflict into a race of industrial endurance rather than a single decisive military campaign.
