Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his counterparts from five other countries in the region are gathering in Hanoi today (March 30) for the sixth Greater Mekong Sub-region Summit.

General Prayut will meet separately with Vietnam’s leader Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Thongloun Sisoulith of Laos ahead of the summit.

Tomorrow he will attend a retreat at which delegates will discuss “economic cooperation amid the changing global landscape” and a meeting on sustainable cooperation and development.

He will return to Thailand the same day.

The summit’s theme is “Leveraging 25 Years of Cooperation and Building a Sustainable, Integrated and Prosperous GMS”.

The region’s leaders are expected to endorse the five-year Hanoi Action Plan and the Regional Investment Framework 2022.

Somehow just do not see the current Thai government being very cooperative. Brought some small number of parts in from Vietnam and paid a crazy high duty.  ASEAN trade benefits do not seem all that clear especially given Thailand's desire to go from 0.2 to 4.0 .  To be fair, Vietnam is far worse when it comes to duties.

Old blood and guts is talking less these days.  Seems like he would like to run for office.  The advancement of Thailand would be severely hampered should he become PM again.

Yes, have to agree. Probably has less to say because he is busy running around handing out the 100 billion Thai Niyom free money to try to buy himself some popularity before the big day, whenever that might be. Took a while to learn from the "old dog" Thaksin on how money wins potential voters but it seems at last the penny has finally dropped.

For those unfamiliar with the pronunciation it rhymes with pook not puck.

Nguyen: 'Tell my why the Thailand Communist Party' cannot register for the next Thai elections because they have an inappropriate ideology.'

Prayut:  'Thai people might confuse pro-military political parties with the TCP.'
