Police to ban heavy trucks running on three main highways to the Northeast during Songkran

The Royal Thai Police has issued an order prohibiting heavy trucks to run on some sections of three main highways where traffic will be very congested during the upcoming Songkran festival next week.

 

However oil trucks, cold storage trucks with seafood cargo, and trucks with farm product cargo, will be exempted. The ban on heavy trucks having 10 wheels up came after the government has ordered all related state agencies to tighten up measures to ensure safe travelling and to facilitate travellers during the festival from April 11-17.

 

In responding to the government’s order, the Royal Thai Police will ban 10-wheel trucks from running on three major routes to the Northeast to facilitate exodus of travelers returning homes in the provinces.

More smile on officers faces for extra 'income'.

But will they be detoured to secondary routes with possibly equal or worse consequences?

So trucks will be banned from major highways.. except most trucks then  cos most trucks I see on the highways and overloaded to the hilt aren't 10 wheelers and the ones that are funnily enough seem to carrying oil, refeers or farm product.

And what would that help? Ban minibuses and tour busses. I know they are highly needed during Songkran but ban those and get rid of the bloody yaba Hell drivers.

Anybody else got the feeling, they are now basically throwing $4!t at the wall and see what sticks?!

Sounds reasonable to me for a country that takes off work and throws water at each other for a week or so while a segment of them tries suicide by motorbike.

Many main roads do not have convenient secondary routes, For example Highway 24 from Surin  eastwards to Ubon Ratchathani much of which is two lane under development to four and numerous chicanes of unmade surface. Transport bosses will switch to 18 and 22 wheelers and avoid the 10 wheel ban?

Not wishing to be pedantic or argumentative, but a fuel carrying truck has a capacity, when it is full, that's it, it's full.

A reefer carries frozen foods as a rule and again, they have a marked capacity.

It is generally the private owner 10 wheeler trucks, often  with trailers and covered with tarps that exceed weight limits.  Many of the overloaded trucks are regular 1 ton pickups and these are generally privately owned and aren't included in the truck ban.

You are absolutely right and what confirms your remarks is the refusal of hundreds of thousands of tourists totally avoiding to participate in this aquatic madness. With regard to the suicidal behaviors in motorcycles I can affirm you that in 6 years in Koh Samui I have been able to note the difference of prudence of the foreign tourists at least 20 or 30% do not forget to put a helmet.

Sorry to disappoint you but the ban is for "10 wheels up" meaning anything with 10 wheels or more are banned, so there will be deliveries of fuel, refrigerated foods, and farm products so there will be no deliveries of BEER for Songkran so now all you drunken farangs can start your complaining

Transport bosses will have to drop down to 6 wheelers so that means more smaller trucks on the highway so more congestion and more vehicles to have accidents with.
