I left out Iran and Iraq on purpose. You can add other places in comments if you think of a place worse than those on the list.

Unless you're a queer for Palestine.

Why are Mindanao (Davao City is a great place to live) & Thailand’s Deep South (nothing wrong with Satun) on the list?

Known for unrest.

Moro MILF (no laughing) and Abu Sayyaf/ISIS-linked Islamists have kidnapped Westerners, including from the Davao area.
In the Thai south, Islamist elements of the Pattani rebellion have carried out bomb attacks, while Satun has largely been spared the insurgency, though not entirely.

I’ve been to Davao twice and can’t say I’d go back, though Satun is a great place.

Hat Yai's in Southern Thailand is fine, so is Sumatra if you exclude Aceh Province in the north, I was based in Bengkulu for five years.

You missed out Myanmar! I'd retire there if there was any form of long-term (annual) visa, (other than marrying for the 4th time...)

Won’t be asking you, otherwise you’ll post a strange out of scope response as above.

Poor attempt of humor

You should try Norsemen

Did you even read the thread title ?

Worst countries in Asia to consider retiring

Worst , not Best

Satun must be the best place for this vote. Nice, quiet and peaceful, with Krabi and Phuket only a boat trip or a few hours away by motorbike. Great riding area too, and relatively safe both for riding and living.

I understand the "Extraordinary Events" argument but by that yard stick New York & London should be on the "List".

I visited Davao City > 35 times between 2008-2016 (even built a house in Kapalong a couple of hours north) & in those days you wouldn't even see somebody smoking on the street because it was against the law.

In all that time & since it's been up there amongst the safest cities in Asia... https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1242155...

Note to self, best never go back to my home town of Warrington as we got bombed 3 times (IRA) when I was a kid (Well 27).

Yes, that would be hell to think about it. But Palestine is not a state:

Why A Palestinian State Does Not Exist and Will Not Be Created

https://www.cfr.org/articles/why-palestinian-state-does-not-exist-and-will-not-be-created

So I guess Palestine is really not a real choice but if it were, it would be number one.

You can scream your MAGA lies as loud and as many times you want, but that doesn't make it a truth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_recognition_of_Palestine

As of September 2025, the State of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by 157 of the 193 member states of the United Nations (UN), or just over 81% of all UN members.[1][2][3] It has been a non-member observer state of the UN General Assembly since November 2012. This limited status is largely due to the fact that the United States, a permanent member of the UN Security Council with veto power, has consistently blocked Palestine's full UN membership;[4][5] Palestine is recognized by the other four permanent members, which are China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom.[6][7]

The United States of American does not recognize Palestine as a state. Nothing else matters.

trump pointing finger.webp

With all the recent changes I'd put Thailand high on the list,,

This is a serious question. Do you know human life exists at the other side of the US border?

Exactly! Worst country in Asia to retire! (no retirement visa, civil war, crap hospitals, crap infrastructure all round etc etc). But beautiful countryside, culture and people. Oh I forgot - most of the food is crap (except for Shan Noodles, Mohinga and tea leaf salad).
