Over 600 million baht in insurance claims were demanded involving road accidents that occurred during the 7-day Songkran festival from April 11-17, according to the Office of Insurance Commission.

Sutthiphol Thaveechaikarn, secretary-general of the commission, said on Tuesday (April 24) that this year was the first year that the OIC put into service electronic platform, enabling the nine branch offices of the OIC, insurance associations and companies to file online reports of road accidents immediately and continuously.

On top of that, he disclosed that more people had made use of the OIC’s hotline No 1186 during the Songkran festival to seek advice on conditions about mandatory life insurance and voluntary life insurance.

That's a great picture.

Sums up Songkhran to most ex-pats.

Water throwing is secondary to the carnage on the roads.

600 million. An expensive Songkran not to mention the grief over loss of life and injuries with ongoing costs. But who cares it is only money and so long as people are having fun does it matter. The PM seemed happy with this year's Songkran so it must be OK.

Perhaps time they changed the insurance system so that those who are higher risk (I know, we're in Thailand, so relatively speaking), whether by age, car model, accident history, etc., pay substantially higher premiums
