BANGKOK, 26 April 2018 (NNT) – Thailand's Ministry of Transport has officially launched the Bangkok Port Coastal Berth 20G, which aims to improve shipping efficiency and establish a connection with Laem Chabang Port in the East.

Yesterday, officials from the Transport Ministry, the Customs Department and other relevant agencies attended the grand opening of the Coastal Berth 20G, which is located at Container Terminal 2 of Bangkok Port’s East Quay. The new facility has been developed to connect ports on the Chao Phraya River with Laem Chabang Port in Chon Buri province in order to boost the efficiency of cargo delivery, reduce traffic congestion on land and reduce logistics costs.

With a harbor length of 250 meters, the Coastal Berth 20G can accommodate two cargo ships at a time and is equipped with two rail mounted gantry cranes, which can lift 40 ton containers, as well as a connected marshaling yard. It is capable of serving up to 2,500 ships per year, equivalent to about 240,000 TEUs, or twenty-foot equivalent container units.

Moreover, the Coastal Berth 20G also offers freight operators with a one-stop service through the e-Matching system of the Customs Department, which allows cargo to be discharged to Laem Chabang Port for loading onto larger ships without the need for additional inspections.

Deputy Transport Minister Pairin Chuchotthavorn, who presided over the opening ceremony, noted that the Coastal Berth 20G will help decrease the number of cargo trucks traveling to Laem Chabang Port by 20,000-30,000 units while the cost of transport will be reduced by 30 percent per container. He also revealed that the Transport Ministry is in the process of improving a coastal berth at Laem Chabang Port in order to receive cargo specifically from Coastal Berth 20G.

The biggest container ships are all between 350 and 400 meter long, so for sure they don't fit in that small port. Make bigger and deeper ports to attract those ships if you want to be an international port.
