I concur, I thought that Monster with Charlize Theron was excellent.

Just finished watching a 2001 film, Monster with Charlize Theron who gives a searing, deglamourised performance as real life serial killer Aileen Wuernos. Understandably nominated that year for best actress.

Charlize Theron leaves her glamorous image behind for this gritty drama, in which she plays a disturbed prostitute who becomes a serial killer. Aileen Wuornos (Theron) was a woman who survived a brutal and abusive childhood in Michigan to become a thick-skinned but emotionally damaged adult. Homeless most of her life, Wuornos subsisted by working as a street prostitute; later, when she was in Florida, down to her last five dollars and pondering suicide, she stopped into a bar for a beer. There, Aileen met Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), a woman in her early twenties who had been sent to live with relatives after her Christian parents became aware of her lesbian lifestyle. Selby is immediately attracted to Aileen, and while Aileen tells Selby she's never been in a lesbian relationship, she soon finds herself equally infatuated with her. Selby runs away from her family and moves into a cheap hotel with Aileen, who initially pays the bills by hooking. However, as their money runs low and Aileen finds herself unable to land a regular job, tensions mount between the two. One night, after a john attacks her, Aileen pulls a gun and kills the man. Although her first murder can be categorized as self-defense, Aileen's loathing for the men who pay her for sex becomes so extreme that she begins killing her customers regardless of their behavior. Meanwhile, Selby slowly becomes aware of the full extent of her lover's instability and the bloody consequences of her actions. Monster was inspired by the true story of Aileen Wuornos, whose life and death was chronicled in two documentaries by filmmaker Nick Broomfield, Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer, and Aileen: The Life and Death of a Serial Killer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

She was brilliant in that movie and I have loved watching her ever since

Bought Les Miserables (latest movie musical with Hugh Jackman) at the urging of Thai friends, no less.

I should've listened to them sooner.

I've watched it three times in one week, with a different Thai friend each time. Man, they are as sappy and sentimental as I am!

Looks funny GS.

Indeed it does khun BM... Not sure the genre though; bio-comedy perhaps? Some pretty funny one-liners in that preview...

I hope they stick to pushing the boundaries on the jokes and it should be interesting

Caught up with the most recent 9 episodes of season 6 of The Mentalist.

The Mentalist had been a solid watch while working on computer or in the background style show.

Season 1 took a little while to find its feet, but season 2, 3, 4 were very watchable. Season 5 was awful. The series lost its direction and the central storyline (of catching a serial killer named Red John) seemed to be forgotten, or looked like it might never be resolved. So much so it became almost farcical. As such I lost interest and delayed watching Season 6 for a couple of months.

Well, Season 6 has redeemed itself! From the get go it started clearing up outstanding issues and, end of episode 9, has become background-worthy once more. tongue.png

I would agree with The Mentalist lost it's way, but its back with vengeance this season. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the FBI connection works, and what that means for all the ex-CBI crew

Watched the last episode of The Mentalist season 6 (ep. 22) the other day.

This series has definitely redeemed itself. The FBI link is working. A couple of the annoying regular characters have gone, the focus is tighter and thank F-#@rk the Red John ridiculousness has come to an end.

Is Simon Baker eye candy? If so Patsycat might enjoy this show.

Last night I watched Monsters Ball with Halle Berry, Billy Bob Thornton and the late Heath Leger.

Another very good movie, with a particularly fine performance by Halle Berry.

Summary: A hard-hitting Southern drama tempered by a story of powerful, life-changing love. It is the story of Hank (Thornton), an embittered prison guard working on Death Row in rural Georgia. He begins an unlikely but emotionally charged affair with Leticia (Berry), the wife of a man he has just executed.

Bookman:

This a great resource thread, I didn't know I have missed so many good movies.

Lots of catching up to do.

Yes, Simon Baker is eye candy. But i don't like The Mentalist. Years ago he was in a thing where he was a lawyer working free for poor people.

Funny how people are watching older movies waiting for the new batch to arrive. I just re-watched The Commitments and The Van. If you like Irish humour and good music those are the ones.

I am in the UK at the moment just watched catfish, people who date on the internet but are not dating who they think ,couple of guys get them together try it some surprises its on p bay

When this came out there was a lot of buzz on internet (where else?) and whether it was 'real' or not

After watching it I came to the conclusion it's not totally legit. They just wanted to tell that story

Also, I remember at the time 'OMG you won't believe it' and not really knowing too much about it going it I thought it was pretty obvious what it was about and wasn't totally shocked by the 'reveal' or anything

Finally got around to sitting down and watching the 2nd season of Hannibal, and it was a powerful finish indeed. In fact, the series now goes on a one year hiatus (or as one clever writer quipped "he-ate-us") and we will have to wait a year for the third season which was renewed.

Honestly, I sort of lost interest as the 2nd season started and the series became very stylized, and hypnotic. But, it gained momentum and it is indeed a beautifully shot series, film quality (though a huge amount of gore). And, as I said it builds to a huge exciting finish.

They have borrowed heavily from the film franchise, even the icky Mason Verger character (ate his own face at Hannibal's behest), but departed significantly also from it and from the Harris novel. Overall, I would recommend it, even if you're a huge Anthony Hopkins fan. wink.png

After Porn Ends.

This documentary focuses on about a dozen ex stars of porn, both male and female. The viewer is introduced to each participant in the documentary as they are now and through what they are doing now. We then hear about what they did in the porn industry and their thoughts on their time in the business and life in general. The end credits feature updates on most participants in the show and are revealing in may ways. For those hoping for titillating nude scenes you will be disappointed tongue.png

This must have been filmed over the course of a year or two around 2010 and seems to have been released in 2012.

Watchable 6.5/10 from me

I really like Louis Theroux's documentaries. The one about how they are rehabilitating pedos in the States was harrowing.

A few months ago i watched his latest ones from LA, and was really disappointed that there were only three episodes. I hope he will come back with more soon.

After Porn Ends sounds good. Louis Theroux did a few decent documentaries on porn stars.

One of my favourite documentary makers.

He also did one on Thai brides many years back...http://documentaryheaven.com/thai-brides-louis-theroux/

The Thai one was legendary.

In fact his early 'weird weekend' stuff was just great as well as his interviews

He has that innocent way about him where he acts like he's not clear about things in order to ask direct questions when he clearly is a very intelligent guy

Always liked him. I think he's doing something new again in the UK now?

Here are a few reality fix-up-the-business shows I have been watching. They are all light filler, fairly much all following the same format. Most episodes run for 40 minutes. Easy watching.

Restaurant Stakeout

Bar Rescue

Hotel Impossible

Kitchen Nightmares

My basic issue with all of these shows is with the brevity the consultants are at the establishment. 3-5 days. I'd love to see one of these shows do the set up and then maybe stay a week or so.

Bar Rescue is interesting enough. Unbelievable some of the money these people stand to lose and how they just go with the flow. Some interesting points on the science of running a bar and how it is set out.

Restaurant Stakeout. This one is fairly okay also. A successful New York restaurant owner comes in and advises on making changes to the business'es. This one uses a lot of hidden cameras to start off and it works well.

Kitchen Nightmares is the US version of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (Gordon Ramsay). IMO it is not as good. Too much focus on family dramas, so much so, it is like they have written a script for all the episodes and they just edit to follow it.

I watch Kitchen Nightmares for the shit hitting the fan factor... It's all put on for show... Remember that infamous episode with the crazy cat lady "Amy's Baking Company" the latest season premiere was a follow up episode, but Gordon didn't go near it. They showed a lot of the behind the scenes stuff, stuff we didn't see in the episode that went to air etc....

Youtube has a treasure trove of stuff about this particular episode and it was <deleted> funny to watch... The US version is shit compared to the UK version, IMO, due to the "reality tv" aspect of the US version. All done for ratings. Same with any reality TV show I guess...

But there's plenty of them out there, the one I like to watch is Heston's reality shows the one where he tries to fix the Little Chef resturant chain <deleted> hilarious....

Another new show to kick off today; "Undateable" ;)

GS, I hadn't seen that episode, but it looks hilarious. Here is the couple in the episode and also later on Doctor Phil.
