Frank James
Complications...indeed. I watched the first (2 part) episode of this drama, and that will do it for me. As the implausible elements continued to cascade, piling higher and deeper, I wondered, as I often do, what do the writers' conferences look like when teams are concocting a mess like this?

bamnutsak
The Brink looks good, liked the first ep. True Detective 2 also looks good based on ep. # 1. I haven't watched it yet, but think I'll like Ballers.
BookMan
In The Brink Jack Black, Tim Robbins and Pablo Schreiber (the prison guard with the pornstache in "Orange is the New Black") try to prevent a third world war that is about to start after a psychotic soldier took over Pakistan. The show is off to a good start, Jack Black as the usual looser who somehow makes it, Tim Robbins as an alcoholic and womanizing politician and pornstache as a fighter pilot with a tiny little drug problem. There are more well known faces and some good looking girls in the show. I very much liked it and will certainly continue watching. If you are not that much into Jack Black, then give it a miss. It is more or less the typical humor one can expect from a show that he plays in. And I must admit that I find that rather amusing ( and I will not justify myself for it ). Thanks Jope. not a jack Black fan at all I thought JB was great in High Fidelity, which I thought was a terrific movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0146882/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_76 He was good there and High Fidelity is a fave movie of mine. Shallow Hal was okay too, but he was a tad annoying. School of rock defines his annoyance factor, for me When I thnk jack balck
BookMan
Watched 'True Detectives' 2 last night - stunningly good. I liked it too. Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams started well. Not sure about Vince Vaughan yet
GrantSmith
True Detective: Never a fan of Colin Farrel when doing an American accent. Maybe the setting should've been Bawston so he could get away with a part-irish accent Rachel McAdams on the other hand, has started well in her role as an alcoholic detective - though, I'm thinking a little along the lines of Chicago PD here and Detective Erin Lindsay Vince Vaughn is like Vincent D'onofrio they just can't do bad guys. Good actors but "Bad Guy" isn't their strong suit. The Brink: Hahahah what a pisser.. Enjoying this pisstake out of American Foreign Policy... Another show I'm really enjoying is Odd Mom Out" Edited June 24, 2015 by GrantSmith

I liked the dialogue and i thought a lot of it was starting that way because we are going to learn a bit about why the characters are that way. The first series was so good, that there becomes a danger with comparisons I'll need a few more episodes to know which way this is leaning

I was almost put off episode one when I read 25% of a negative review before watching. I think i was more conscious of how Vince Vaughan's role would be, expecting him to crack a joke, so I wasn't focused too heavily on the rest of the goings on
Frank James
Deutschland 83 Sundance is going against the grain again (see Rectify) by offering something far outside the usual realm of what passes for "spy stories." This series may be doomed from the start outside of Germany because Sundance dares to play it in German with English subtitles. If you saw and likes the great German film The Lives of Others, this will please you. There is a rich vein of material to be tapped, concerning East Germany from 1945 - 90. The first episode got off to a great start, lots of tension without over-drama and pyrotechnics. Looking forward to more.

I liked the dialogue and i thought a lot of it was starting that way because we are going to learn a bit about why the characters are that way. The first series was so good, that there becomes a danger with comparisons I'll need a few more episodes to know which way this is leaning I agree: this article was pants, written by presumably an American who doesn't like things to be "dark". Yes, this was the main thrust of his argument: in a program whose 1st series was notable for its dark, brooding and unsettling atmosphere, he objects to the dark brooding armosphere being laid on with a trowel. For example, one of his "ridiculous moments" is that a bar singer near the end is "singing a dark song". That really is his entire justification for terming it ridiculous. Additionally, many of the "ridiculous moments" he points out come from his lack of understanding of what is being intended, coupled with a misplaced desire to shoehorn in sexism as a criticism he thinks is unassailable. So he points out how "ridiculous" it is that the daughters Antigone and Athena both have names from Greek tragedy, while neglecting that their father is a hippy philosopher who runs an institute classically named "The Principaeum, and so it is, at very least, completely consistent for him as a dopy hippy to have given both his daughters matching literary Greek names. Plus he is himself sodding Greek (surname Bezzerides)! He mocks the bird in the car but doesn't point out it is visually quoting "The Maltese Falcon", another LA-based noir detective story, a genre that this show is firmly indicating it is a part of, and derived from. He says that it's sexist that Ani's character is introduced in terms of her sexual activity, and then mocks the highway patrol officers "uninterested blow-job" face as bad acting. He ignores that this highway patrol officer's character has been introduced in terms of his sexual activity, ( as a guy who needs erectile dysfunction drugs before he can evoke interest in his girlfriend), and that the uninterested blow job face is intended to confirm his inability/ lack of sexual interest, and not an acting mistake. And so on... I'm not saying this is a great show: it's not anywhere as good as the first series, and it's not aiming at subtlety, and it's too similar to the LA-noir genre that it is a tribute to. Series 1 seemed unique in style, content and execution, and this doesn't. But it isn't bad.

BookMan
Killjoys (sci-fi) A Canadian sci-fi bounty hunter series. As the show came on to screen I noticed the syfy logo in the bottom right... This is usually a warning of a poorly scripted show with a limited SFX budget, with most effects done by 1st year SFX students. I wasn't disappointed... The future is indeed inhabited by aesthetically pleasing peoples who have failed to learn the lessons of billions before them. Not really sure what happened after about 5 minutes as LINE messaging became more interesting at that stage. Killjoys follows a trio of hard-living but fun-loving bounty hunters – John, D'avin and Dutch – taking on interplanetary missions, chasing and capturing deadly criminals throughout a distant system named the Quad. They have sworn amongst themselves to remain neutral during a bloody, multi-planetary class war that threatens to destroy the Quad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killjoys_(TV_series)
