Ulysses G.
I really like "The Goldbergs". It has gotten good reviews since the beginning, but did not sound like my cup of tea until I watched a few episodes. It is a sitcom based on a real family back in the 1980s. The narrator is the grown-up Adam Goldberg, looking back on his childhood and has a lot in common with the narrator on "The Wonder Years". I was not sure about it at first, but the more I watch it, the more I like it and the 22 minute episodes are perfect when I don't have much time. It is just a pleasant diversion, but fairly funny once you know the characters. I just wish that it had been out longer, so there were more episodes. I think that it has just started the 2nd year.
Frank James
The Driver on BBC: Very good start! Reminds me of my old cab driving days, but nobody ever made me an offer of extra work on the side. Also reminds me of a Lost Classic: The Driver (1978) starring Ryan O'Neal (Mister Barry Lyndon Himself!) and Bruce Dern (years and many miles before he re-appeared as the loveable semi-demented old coot in Nebraska) This Walter Hill extravaganza has been compared to stylish French New Wave Noir from the 70's, particularly Jean Pierre Melville's Le Samourai, starring Alain Delon. Well...BS. The Driver is better. That French movie is a whole lotta nothing going on. The Driver is worth watching just to see Bruce Dern swagger around acting like a hot shot cop, all decked out in a 70's wide lapel polyester sport coat. O'Neal plays a character known only as The Driver, who, like Ryan Gosling in Drive (2012) will drive you to the scene of whatever crime you wish to commit, and give you a short time to do your worst. Dern is known only as The Detective, and his obsession is to catch The Driver in the act. They wanted to get Steve McQueen to play The Driver, but he was busy elsewhere. They brought in Isabelle Adjani from France, who thought this was going to be her big Hollywood star break. Instead, she said she found it hard to get work after critics penned unkind reviews. What do they know, anyway? Quentin Tarantino says it's one of the coolest films ever. He may be right. I keep it alive in my torrent collect to seed it out to other fans of such films. Walter Hill has made some great action films: The Long Riders, Last Man Standing, 48 Hours, Extreme Prejudice (my personal favorite). Check it out sometime. It's a triumph of style over substance.
GrantSmith
2 episodes in and I'm really liking 'Scorpion' It's like Rain Man meets Black Box meets NCIS's Fornell.. Eddie Kaye Thomas's character is supporting yet ridiculous (in a comedic way), seemingly typecast from his days as Paul Finch in the American Pie franchise. Get on it! Frank James
Just watched the season finale of The Bridge. Relax, NO SPOILERS! Although there were better episodes this season, things got handled nicely. The rumor is out that this show is over for good. That makes me sad. As improbable as a lot of the action has been, such as the ease with which all of the characters get back and forth across the US/Mex border, it's still different and better than the great majority of stuff that shows up on network TV. FX took no pains to promote it. Maybe it's too expensive, with all of the location shooting. It was great to see so many Hispanic actors in non-stereotypical roles. I like the use of Spanish, accompanied by subtitles. It feels more authentic. Thanks to the cast and crew for a great weird ride. Eleanor...I love you. MrWorldwide
I knew there had to be a few new plot twists in the final season of Game of Thrones, but I didnt see this coming. Someone needs to let HRH know that nothing good ever comes of gazing at this particular throne.
keemapoot
Homeland is back starting today. Should be available for download tomorrow early I hope. The first episode is double episode two hours, and the initial reviews are great. Ulysses G.
Homeland. Good news. I'm still a big fan, but glad Brody is gone. The first one or two episodes last year were Brody-free and I thought that was a better direction. I wonder which inappropriate character Carrie will screw next. Popular Post Frank James
There's an interesting interview in today's Guardian with James Spader, in which he seems to be saying that classic films are semi extinct, that there is no more great interest in them. At least that's what i think he's saying. And I disagree. Through various forms of media: streaming, torrents, great restorations by such companies as Criterion, as well as restoration campaigns by AFI, Turner and others, more classic films are available than ever before. Colleges all over the world offer classes in film appreciation. You want it, it's out there. It's true the "art houses" have mostly folded, but now one can watch at home on a large hi-def screen, pausing, re-rolling, with great sound, and not surrounded by dullards talking, walking in and out, texting, etc. As for Mr. Spader, he is enjoying great success with The Blacklist. The plots are absurd, but the action is non-stop, and we get to see Spader's Reddington being ultra-suave and always impeccably dressed in the middle of chaos, easily outshining all of the B and C-list actors that make of the ensemble cast. It seems they have jacked up the violence this season, as well as trying to make Megan Boone more sexy and interesting. If someone is threatening Red with a big blade, it's a cue for him to come out with an anecdote. "Ah, a machete, my goodness, I haven't seen one of those since the last time I had dinner with Che Guevara in Bolivia, what was it, 'Fifty-Nine?..." A true Guilty Pleasure, that show.
Ulysses G.
Personally, I kind of agree with him on classic films. I know that I prefer to watch something decent and new to the films my parents watched. I don't mind some of the best films of that era, but there are very few that I am crazy about. However, a lot of people claim to feel otherwise, so I guess that it is just up to personal taste.
Frank James
I just watched the first episode of the Peaky Blinders. I followed the whole series last time, and understood about 60% of what the hell was going on. Really, I wish it came with subtitles. I'll bet even my UK brothers & sisters have trouble with those accents. So, it's this family of "Gypsies", named Shelby (!?), although, except for Polly, the matriarch, none of them look the least bit Roma. The family business seems to be bookmaking, as in off track betting, plus whatever else presents itself in the way of crime. The UK system of wagering on horses is quite different from the US, so it's hard to understand what they're doing. Last season, a very uptight British cop (well played by Sam Neill, whose diction is clear and understandable) was sent to Birmingham, after cleaning up Belfast, with orders to sort the place out, starting with the bent police force. He seems to be a supercop, sort of an MI5 guy, getting his orders directly from W. Churchill, who apparently was a cabinet minister at the time (early 1920's). We have several factions fighting for dominance, but the one that draws the worst heat, as it always does, all over the world, is the organized labor movement, agitated by the Socialists and Communists. Most of the men in the cast are WW1 vets. They are very disturbed guys, and there's a recession on. Another warring faction is the Irish, although why they are fighting in Birmingham instead of in their own country is one of the show's mysteries to me. I don't know what this Peaky Blinders name refers to, unless it's their newsboy caps (I've got one of those, from Donegal. Can't wait for cold weather so I can wear it again!) which have razor blades concealed in the front edge of the visor. They whip their caps off and slash an enemy's face with these caps! Nasty! Anyway, they're back at it, and the family is trying to expand the business. The old cop is back too, although it looked like he was dead at the end of the first run. Birmingham in those days looks like a really ugly place, where it's always either raining, or enveloped in coal-smoky fog. And on the show, there's a murder or severe beating every ten minutes or less. The show has great style, and the latest episode looks like they've got a big budget for period sets, rather like a BBC Boardwalk Empire. Is this show historically correct? How does it grab you Brittanic folks? Edited October 5, 2014 by Frank James
