Hi, I wonder if anyone can give me any advice. My ED visa is due to expire on 15th June and I'm not planning on renewing it. Would I be able to get a tourist visa at Kanchanaburi doing a visa run with a previous ED visa?

Any my advice on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You could get a 30 day visa exempt entry at the Ban Phu Nam Ron crossing.

Tourist visas are only issued at embassies and consulates and there is none near the crossing.

With the 30 day visa exempt, how often could I renew that?

If if I wanted to get a 60 day tourist visa, where would I need to go? I don't really want to travel too far.

You could apply for a 30 day extension at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht.

You can only do 2 visa exempt entries at land border crossing per calendar year.

Vientiane Laos would be the closest location if you are in Bangkok to apply for a single entry tourist visa.

I'm in Hua Hin. Could I get to Laos by land and if so, could I do that visa in a day?

Do I just need the cancellation letter for the visa exempt?

You can travel overland to Nong Khai and then cross the bridge to Laos. You apply for the visa the morning of one day and pick up your passport the next afternoon.

No need for the cancellation letter.

Do you know how long the journey takes by land? Also, do you know of the cheapest place to stay overnight in Laos? Sorry for all the questions!

I live in Hua Hin to

If you want to go to Kanchanaburi you could obviously do that yourself or you can use this guy who I have used in the past, you get the minibus from Soi 51 and he will pick you up at the bus station in  Kanchanaburi and take you to the border and back

There is also a company located at the CondoChain opposite Bangkok Hospital on Petchkasem road that do trips to the Kanchanaburi border but I don't know how often they go, it certainly isn't daily

For trips to Laos I use these, I am actually going tomorrow, used them numerous times with no problems

You will see that they also run trips to Kanchanaburi although the above guy works out cheaper and you don't have to be in BKK at 4am like the TVS service

Thanks for all the info. The Laos service is from BKK though and I'm in HH. Is there a service from HH to Laos?

As far as I know no none, you could ask at the Condochain but I don't think they do them,  I get the minibus from Hua Hin to BKK and meet up with TVS there, after the trip we usually arrive back in BKK around midnight, I will either get the trip minibus driver to bring me back to HH (usually around 1600 Baht)  or get a taxi for around the same price

Ofcourse you can always drive the 800 something km to Nong Khai from Hua Hin.Better to fly up to Udon Thani and jump on a visa run from there, where all is aranged for you.40 min drive from Udon to the border.Parking can be done close by for a small fee.Visa runs can also be done with an agent from the border,or you jump on the bus across the border and do all youre-self.With anyone with you that speak the language you may be lucky and not get ripped off. Then as normal.Have you done it before its easy.First time its a pain. You can also leave youre passport with an agent and they do it all for you.Personally I dont give my passport to anyone but this one I have tried and it worked fine.No need to sit and wait for hours just to hand in youre papers. You dont get the passport back the same day anyway.Any place to stay in Vientienne I would say close to the river where you have many restaurants and hotel options.Laos is not cheap.12-1500bth a night.

Probably quicker/easier to fly out.  You can do a in/out with Air Asia on their new route to Kuala Lumpur (from Hua Hin).

Otherwise, go to BKK and fly wherever.

why the hell would you piss about going from HH to Laos? Jump on a cheap flight from Hua Hin to KL, can go from about 2500 thb return and do the visa there. Prob cheaper and easier and a hell of a lot quicker than sitting in minibuses with stinky backpackers all day.

Just check a HuaHin to KL is about 8000 return. from Bangkok about 5000.

If it was 2500 i would not even consider anything else.

And you would have to stay at least one night which adds another 1000 as the flights can not be on the same day. (not available).

The price is rather high (time of year, partly). Bear in mind the option of flying to/from Hua Hin in one direction and to/from Don Muang in the other direction. Getting to/from Don Muang is a hassle, but makes the trip doable in a day if you really want.

I would not fly back into Bangkok with an old ED Visa in my passport, unless you like interrogations and are willing to risk a possible denial-of-entry.  Flights are crazy-priced now, anyway.

If you want a TR Visa, you can train all the way to Penang or KL and back - the 2nd class sleeper is pretty good.  Also could take the sleeper Train up to Nong-Khai to Vientiane and back.  The only problem with the overnight train to Vientiane, it can run late, so you may miss applying for your visa that day.

A bit quicker and there with time to spare would be to bus to Bangkok (get there by 7PM), then a VIP overnight bus on to Nong Khai.   I suppose there are VIP buses from HH down to Hat Yai or direct to a border to Malaysia also (probably Sadao) - but never went that way by bus.

Crossing back to Thailand by land from Malaysia is no problem, provided you have 20K Baht worth of cash to show the IO upon-entry.  Even easier coming across Friendship Bridge from Vientiane, and no reports of them asking to see the money (but best to have it just in case).
