PHUKET: Ramadan will begin in Thailand tomorrow (May 17) after heavy cloud cover across Southern Thailand thwarted efforts to confirm the lunar phase of a new moon in the South, the Chularatchamontri, formally known as the Sheikhul Islam Office for Thailand, has announced.

 

By the Islamic calendar, Ramadan was set to begin yesterday (May 15), but the tradition of confirming the new lunar month with the naked eye to mark the beginning of the Holy Month pushed back the fasting period by a day.

 

In anticipation of the Holy Month’s arrival, activities were held across Phuket yesterday with various agencies donating food and drink to mosques to support the breaking of fast communal dining events held after sunset each night.
