About Thai curry in the U.S. versus in Thailand

Featured Replies

In the USA (New York City in particular where there is a decent amount of Thais) I have no issue eating Thai curry (green, massaman, etc.).

In Thailand, I have seen the ingredient shrimp listed. I am allergic to shellfish of all sorts and will get sick. Therefore I never actually tried it whilst I was in the country. I'm not sure if it's an ingredient in the U.S recipe as well.

Usually the brand that I use over here when eating is: Maesri.

Maybe it is included but it's such a minimal amount that it doesn't really do any damage. Does all Thai curry include shrimp or shrimp paste?

Watch this Youtube video for your answer. Her name is Pai and lives in Canada. She is an amazing cook and produces amazing videos.

Google recipes and read the ingredients. All common Thai recipes are online.

I use Lobo brand curry paste packets in Thailand and they all (red, green and masaman) list shrimp paste, usually about 4% as an ingredient and have a warning notice on the packet in this regard...if yer allergic it's a good idea to keep an eye on the curry packet ingredients...

but ye gotta ask yerself, what would a thai curry paste be without shrimp paste? most of them combine with coconut cream which may be another allergic hazard...

I love a pork penang myself. Best results is to leave it a day and lets the chilli's sit.  Nice n strong a day later
