Can anybody recommend a company that I can use for an online account to day trade on the NYSE.

I made an application to Etrade about 6 weeks ago but it seems thier customer service is very bad. I have e-mailed them numerous times to enquire why it is taking so long and is there a problem. No response and no account

Try interactivebrokers.com. Very competitive comissions, nice system. Just note that according to US laws, in order to daytrade there your account size needs to be minimum $25,000. If you are not a daytrader, $5,000 will be enough to open an account with the above.

If you want to start with a really small account (not daytrade) try mbtrading.com - minimal account is $2,000.
