Good news for garlic and red onoin farmers

The Office of Agricultural Economics in Nakhon Ratchasima Province has reported an increase in garlic and red onion output and favourable prices of the products due to high demand both in local and overseas markets.

Mrs.Nareerat Runaphai (นารีณัฐ รุณภัย), Director of the Agriculture Research Centre in Nakhon Ratchasima revealed there were about 84,000 tonnes of garlic output during 2006-2007 which is 4 percent higher than last year because of attractive market price. Although the farmers have expanded planting areas, the supply is still insufficient to the market need.

The Agriculture Research Centre has estimated the produce of red onion this year at 230,000 tonnes while farming space will remain the same due to inundation and rainy season causing damage to some areas. Thailand has been exporting red onion to Indonesia and Malaysia which are its biggest markets.

Mrs.Nareerat adds garlic and onion will be supplied to the market during February to March and she forecasts this year pricing would be as favourable as the previous year.

Thanks for the news JD. Just planted a few cloves last week but sounds like I planted to early or to late :-( We'll wait and see how they do.
