Should you be careful about what you write in TV Forum?

I am a bit surprised by the significant number of members who either dismiss, or don't care, or even don't believe that their every move is watched and duly recorded for posterity, and for unknown purposes.

History has repeatedly shown that massive gathering of citizens' private data never ends well (from the nazis, to the Stasi, the KGB, the FBI with Hoover, to today's NSA).

It is not because such data gathering is done by "private" companies that it changes anything, because today state and big business are intimately connected (just check who the chairmen of Alphabet or Amazon are in cahoots with).

Right now, this data may be mostly used for advertising purposes, but that could be changed with the stroke of a (governmental) pen!

Every time I shut down my PC I delete the following:

- Visited Websites + History.
- My "search results" of the past session.
- Cookies.
- Cache.
- Active log-in's.

Question: Does that do any good or is it an exercise in futility?
Thx & cheers.

It probably makes you feel better, and doesn't tire you out as much as having a wank.

The problem is not what's stored on your PC (except to the extent that you don't want to share your favourite porn sites with your children) but rather what the internet giants and governments store.

Maybe there is some benefit to doing all your browsing, email etc. via an encrypted VPN

It is somewhat amazing that someone who prouds himself of not reading anything may feel that he can make such definitive statements!

Stop exaggerating .

All I said was that I couldnt be bothered to watch a video , reason being , whatever the video says , I will not come to the conclusion that theres someone continuously watching  me, recording my every move  and constantly got me under surveillance .

I am quite sure that the video will be paranoid nonsense .

You seem very interested in the subject matter though so why not watch the video. You said it yourself when you learned the ad software that listens in order to show you the correct advertising. You say it's a good thing. It's a bit like the film inception. Planting ideas in your head. If ad revenue has that type of tech at play on a mass scale then the government's clearly have it too or something far more sinister. Did you really want pizza or did you see an advert which helped you decide and if pizza Hut is number 1 in CM for best pizza I'm thinking you just went to the number 1 result.

The great thing is that now the 'watching' can be automated, and a 'bot can sift through all the data from your credit card and your browsing history and your Rabbit MRT card and your Frequent Flier card and flag up anyone they find intersting

"Oh - ho! Gets the same bus as Gerry Adams' girlfriend every morning, AND got the same flight as Gerry Adams to Tennerife last summer - this one's worth watching..."

Thats helpful though , if you are wanting to buy a car , then its helpful to get shown cars for sale , by way of adverts.

You get to select from their options and presented choices when buying and don't bother to go view cars on your own. That's the danger.

you become lazy, a sheep, a follower..

No one is baiting you as far as I see.

Do feel like that's the case?

Perhaps you should examine yourself more closely.

It does some good to your PC, keeping it "clean", but it doesn't change anything as far as your personal account is concerned.

Everything remains there...forever...

And it is not only your internet activity, but everything you do with your device: photos, reading books, watching videos, moving around...

You sound like you have something to hide and that you are worried about other people finding out what you have been doing on-line

No videos in my post.

If there were, I wouldn't use "read", but "watch".

There is one article from NBC, and the other link shows all the tweets sent by the person who is the subject of the article.

These tweets expose parts of the content of his personal account as kept by Google.

We are not talking about Thaivisa here, but about the companies that actually run your devices as if they belonged to them!

So why is the title of the topic 'Should you be careful about what you write in TV Forum?'?

My wife's pizza is way better than Pizza Hut, 1117, etc. Yum.

You should watch Trump signing his executive orders...with a pen!

The meeting between both Korean leaders...pens again!

The formation of the new Italian government...pens again!

Hopefully, there are still some people who can write...or at least sign...

Facebook (FB) is one of those companies doing  "dirty deeds" with customer data.

If you want a specific example of that:

Check out what photos the general public ("non-friends") sees when they go to your FB page.

The FB customer (us) chooses the profile photos.  That part is a good thing.

However, the other photos  are chosen by some random person or AI program.

A FB employee with bad intentions can use their position to display photos that tarnish your image.

I correspond by letter to the bank, solicitor, accountant. I used to receive email from the utility companies back in the UK and reply by letter. Drives them bonkers.

Unfortunately you don't read, otherwise you would discover that every single person has something to hide, at least in the eyes of someone else.

A few years ago, two young Australians were exchanging emails on their way to celebrate something in Las Vegas.

In one of the emails, one of them wrote something like "we are going to blow up the city, or the casino".

Landing in L.A. the two guys were arrested and taken into custody, and after being interrogated, they were deported!

Did they have anything to hide?

Certainly not on their side.

But for those busy to intercept all the emails sent anywhere in the world, it seems they had...

Whatever you write in this forum goes into your Google account, and who knows where else.

I used Thaivisa in the thread title to make it a bit more attractive, but this is true for everything you write with your device.

No I think that is fake news.  Those are not real pens but ceremonial ones with no ink.  He is just pretending to sign!

This Google is tremendous.  I was going to ask if Donald Trump sticks his tongue out the corner of his mouth in concentration when he signs, and a simple search indicates that may not necessarily be the case.

Exhibit 1

However, I am concerned at the reason for the small child's apparent distress.

It is my belief that it is in fact the small child that has signed the bill into law, and Donald has taken the child's pen to pretend to sign while in fact only adding some unnecessary punctuation at the end; a full stop, perhaps a comma, or a small cross, or, given the apparent concentration, a smiley or a thumbs-up.

The dynamic marketing companies / social media owners etc., glean a lot marketing / segmentation / customer targetting / buying behavior and more  from their analysis and of course sell it for a good return.

Moral or immoral, is I guess the real question.

Its convenient .

I would rather see adverts that may interest me (like cheap flights and erection dysfunctional help ), rather than receiving adverts about sanitary pads  and dog food

If only we could be sure that our data was just being used for targeted advertising...

But the same data that's great for sending you ads can also be bought, massaged and used to discourage one group of voters or another.  (If you actually watched the video I linked...)  Or used to keep you from getting information that may be useful to you, but bad for a company that manufactured that drug and they don't want you to know it's what caused your winkie to turn green.

Or to repair the roads only in the neighborhoods that seem to favor one party or the other, based on geo-analysis of tweets.  Or deny you health insurance because of how many times you searched for health issues.  Or employment because your profile fits the profile of an employee with a higher chance of fomenting unrest at the water cooler.

And even if I fit none of those parameters, I want better for my loved ones who will outlive me by decades.

Not so, just because you don't hear about them on the 6 o'clock news every day, doesn't mean they don't happen, from what I hear they happen in spades!

I have them keep sending me paper statements...seeing as they no longer give any interest on the money I let them keep which they use to make themselves "loads o money" they can pay for printing and postage instead.
