Korean boy hospitalised in serious condition after nearly drowning

By The Nation

A Korean boy was in a critical condition after he was saved from drowning in a Pattaya hotel swimming pool.

The boy, Yoon Seongmin, 12, was rushed to a hospital at 11.30pm by rescuers from a local foundation after security officers pulled him out of the pool of the Four Seasons Place Hotel.

A hotel staff told police that they had noticed the boy floating face-down in the swimming pool. Initially, they did not realise that he was unconscious because his mother was sitting beside the swimming pool. The staff later noticed that the boy was lying still so he alerted security officials of the hotel to pull him out of the pool.

A slant to this, my Thai son and his Thai wife are both fully qualified professional swimming coaches and qualified lifeguards, and qualified judges and referees for national swimming competitions etc.

They stay regularly at hotels all over Thailand to officiate at national / local swim events, many hotels they stay in have pools. They have mentioned often that there was not one staff person, qualified or not-qualified at the poll and no fences, barriers whatever to stop toddlers from entering the water, 24 hrs a day.

My son tells me he has made a comment several times to hotel managers / owners. Response usually, 'not my problem.'

He's also asked 'are any staff members trained in CPR?'

Response: 'what's CPR' / 'yes but he's not working today', etc.

Welcome to Asia. I think it is more than a Thailand problem. Korea, China, not sure

what the rest are like, but likely similar.

Full marks to this staff member spotting the young boy floating face down and not realising he was unconscious!
