300,000?

That estimate seems rather conservative - unless they're just counting pros and not including semi-pros, sideliners, mistresses, kept women with foreign "sponsors," et al.

1.3m more like it

Where do you draw the line, is a spouse who has an extramarital relationship, one who lives in any country in the world, is she/he a sex worker? It seems to me that this term, sex worker, is a catch-all that can be used to suit anyone who wants to have a bash at Thai's and anyone who has casual sex where there is perceived to be remuneration involved,  dinner out, a weekend away. For me, a sex worker is a person who makes their living solely out of selling themselves for sex, not semi-anything, not mistresses, not sideliners etc. 300k seems reasonable enough but who knows, either in this country or even in our home countries!

"Reality or the denial of reality..."

one of the reasons I moved to Thailand.

You and a good few others...

Well, it's not going to be the opera, or the football, or the museums and cultural centres... and the tourism bit is all done on the cheap so it won't be that either.

Quality TV programs? nope, scratch that. Beaches? Landfills?

This is probably onshore, so off sure plus the 'sugar daddy' monies sent back, do you think you could double the estimate? Therefore a real estimate could be closer to 4-5% of GDP. Plus the perks by those turning a blind eye? Why would you want someone bringing up the facts.

"It was reckoned that the industry represented 2% of GDP.

With GDP now at 13 trillion baht it could mean that the sex industry today is worth a staggering 260 billion baht, said Sanook". 'Thai sex industry now worth 260 billion baht, say Thai media'

Thailand is not the biggest brothel in the world. USA Is the biggest - and dirtiest - and richest - brothel in the world.

and there are plenty of filmed evidence to prove it.

One of the oddities of American law is that prostitution is illegal there, and pornography is entirely legal. So as long as you have someone with a camera in the room with you, have at it.

Sex workers are kept outside the formal economic sector, unprotected by labor laws and enjoy no social security or welfare the way workers in the legitimate enterprise do.

There are very few countries in the world that are different. Everyone knows that making it legal is the best thing for sex workers. Taxing it would provide funds for security, health and protection for workers and customers, but hypocrites pretend that it doesn't occur. Sad really.

If the figure is 300,000 sex workers then I have worked my way through 1% of those in 31 years.

Let's be honest though, the real figure is 10x that.

3,000,000 is almost 5% of the population, equivalent to every single woman in Thailand aged between 19-27.  No, it is closer to 300,000 but I can see why you might think that if you spend your life in red light districts.

Just now, Father Fintan Stack said:

Nonsense laddie there's more than 300,000 brass in Bangkok alone and I can tell you that because every massage shop, hotel, hairdresser, bar and karaoke in the city has them. Countrywide there are millions.

In every city I have been, worked and lived in Thailand there is a massive sex for sale industry with women of all ages working at different periods during their lives. Even in the predominantly Muslim South there are plenty of brothels and knocking shops everywhere.

You stay ignorant and misinformed in some silly attempt to depend the reputation of the Thais though, it just makes you look inexperienced or is it as I suspect that you are just in denial.

In addition, trying to paint me as a sex-tourist spending time in 'red light areas' shows how little you actually know about this country, and how completely and utterly wrong you are that the majority of prostitutes are anywhere near these areas.

In every little town there are a dozen or two prostitues, while there are also tens of thousands of women, try to actually think a little, if you can.

And I did not paint you as anything, you claimed to have slept with what works out to 2 prostitutes per week every week for 31 years, you're a sexpat, deal with it, and sorry for not knowing as much about the prostitution of this country as you, I don't doubt for a second that I don't, how that translates in your mind to knowing little about this country only confirms you as a sexpat, there is rather a lot more to know about Thailand than brothels, and if you truly think that 5% of the population are prostitutes that demonstrates how little you know about Thailand outside of your vice.

Again, nonsense.

You are deeply in denial but I also suspect you know very little about this country despite your continued attempts to defend it.

"Estimates of the number of prostitutes in Thailand vary widely and are subject to controversy. A 2004 estimate by Dr. Nitet Tinnakul of Chulalongkorn University gave a total of 2.8 million sex workers, including 2 million women, 20,000 adult males, and 800,000 minors under the age of 18."

From the horse's mouth. Chulalongkorn Uni.

You again confuse not knowing about the sex industry with not knowing about Thailand, and you wanted to shake off your sexpat image, hilarious!

Straight from the horses mouth comes from horse racing, the groom and trainer are considered the best possible people to receive tips from, and the only better could be from the horses mouth itself.  People speculating are not known as the horses mouth, that would be the prostitues themselves, which would not help in this case unless you asked all of them.  I presume you an English language learner?
