More than 60 percent of Thais are concerned that Thailand may end up being a hub of imported hazardous trash because of widespread corruption, greediness, lack of discipline of the Thai people, lax regulation and inspection and lack of an efficient body in garbage management, said Mr Noppadol Kannikar, director of Super Poll, citing the result of an opinion poll.

Super Poll gauged the opinions of 1,037 people from all walks of life about the import of electronic trash and plastic trash into the country for recycling.

Besides the 64.7 percent of respondents who expressed concern about the possibility that Thailand may turn into a hub of imported hazardous trash, the poll shows 35.3 percent think otherwise that it is not possible.

The Thai people are correct to be worried that Thailand will be a "hub" of imported waste. I think some might argue that it already is...

In a country with lax law enforcement, corrupt officials and virtually no effective monitoring systems in place, what do you expect will happen?

I would love to say to the Thai people that they have nothing to worry about, but perhaps a better message is that they better get used to it. If it has not already occurred, then it will likely occur soon.

Thailand always wants to be a 'Hub', now you'll get your wish...

Thailand became the hub of imported trash when it allowed the  budget tours to wander aimlessly and shamlessly, behind the lawless thai tour guides ..

Don't worry, it is already.

too much to overcome, once this storm in a teacup, news-wise, blows over , things will return to toxic-normal

Why are they worried, the PM yesterday applauded all the valiant efforts to sustain the environment.

Are they suggesting he lives in a parallel universe?

I wonder if the question had been worded differently: "Are you concerned about the plastic bag trash that is being used and discarded nationwide by the population here, appearing to have no pride in their country, or concern about the effect it is having on the environment?"

Would it have resulted in the same 60 percent "concerned" response, or a blank look and the question, "What plastic bag trash?"

Thailand doesn't need to import trash to be The Hub of trash.

you know, I walked round the  village the other day and everyone I mean "everyone" is  talking about this, first thing in the morning , last thing at night, some said they even dream about it...........honest to gawd

Many areas of Thailand are already looking like garbage dumps for local trash anyway, carelessly and routinely and without a shred of guilt discarded by exactly those 60% of locals (and more) who are oh so concerned about that imported refuse. And I may add that the foreign trash mentioned is actually imported by local companies and businessmen, not clandestinely brought across the border by nefarious, ill-wishing foreigners in the dark of night.

I apologize for sounding a bit frustrated. But if people are worried about the growing landfill into which Thailand is turning, they better should be looking at their own habits first before rambling about "imported trash" that amounts to but a tiny, tiny fraction of what they themselves dump in the countryside and their villages and towns on a daily basis.

Too late.

People shouldn't worry about becoming a hub of trash ... ....Thailand is already a hub.

There is garbage in the Golf of Thailand in an extension of 16km. It's only a matter of time and wind that you will see it on Pattaya's beaches.

If there is a real govt next they have a lot of problems to tackle with. Even with "trash" people visiting Thailand

The real polluters are people who feed fish in the ocean or who smoke on a beach! ?

Okay...a few things, here!

a ) last week, Thais didn't even know about "imported trash"...but now a poll shows, they are worried sleepless about it?!

b ) of course, Thais are not worried about their own trash, which they throw left and right, where ever the sit, stand or walk!

c ) is "trash" the new hip- subject for the next 5 days, before it gets replaced with some other stuff, Thais care deeply about?

Too late.

Take out the word "garbage", and that sums up nearly all of the problems that exist in Tland.  Well done that someone actually said it.

Gotta love these poll headlines.  More than 60 percent of Thais think......

I can see why the locals don't like this.

It could tarnish the good reputation of care for the environment,

that Thailand has. :burp:
