Boris Becker claims diplomatic immunity in bankruptcy case

Former tennis champion Boris Becker is claiming diplomatic immunity against an attempt to sue him.

The three-time Wimbledon winner claims his appointment as a diplomat by the Central African Republic affords him protection from any legal claims.

Mr Becker was declared bankrupt in 2017 over money owed to private bank Arbuthnot Latham. He is now being pursued for "further assets".

There's a good idea that Thaksin and his cohorts will find very interesting and helpful, the sneaky way of buying a diplomatic passport and immune yourself from all legal actions against you,, you hear that K. Thaksin?....

You think he did not already long ago?

Diplomatic and consular immunity are not intended to benefit the individual; they are intended to benfit the mission of the foreign government or international organization. Thus an individual does not “own” his or her immunity and it may be waived, in whole or in part, by the mission member’s government.

Surely, the EU has similar rules.

The "mission member’s government" in this case is the Central African Republic so it doesn't matter what the EU rules are.

Thai "on-the-runs" have enough illegal stash to enjoy world travel until their statute of limitations expires, then it's home again with throngs of followers meeting at the airport, including some high and mighty politicians.

A pity for them then that there is no stature of limitations applicable since they have been convicted already.

It is not enough to buy a diplomatic passport to become a diplomat of a country in an other country or international body....the country or international body on the receiving end must approve the diplomatic accreditation.... and in the EU and other civilised countries such diplomats will not be allowed to do business.

Poor old Boris...he must have really screwed up to be where he is. As an aside, congrats to posters for getting Thaksin in on the 2nd post of a thread about Boris Becker and his diplomatic status....surprised we haven't squeezed Trump in yet...haha

Benigno Aquino didn't get the reception at the airport he would have wished for. One must temper the excitement of coming home against the ire of those one has wronged.

Tell that to the so-called diplomats who abuse the system, day in, day out.

There may be a second statute of limitation regarding after how long after a conviction a sentence can be carried out. I certainly don't know about Thai law, though, and it can be rather lengthy in some cases.

With regard to Boris, the whole affair saddens me. He must have got a hell of a lot wrong to lose some 80M Marks, a failed marriage and alimony for that Ermakova woman certainly did not help. Well, he's going to live, with all the connections he has.

I wish, Thaksin and sis got diplomatic passports of the Central African Republic and stayed there for good!

EU refers to not accepting a Diplomat's credentials, or requesting for a waiver.

Sorry, that wasn't clear in your post.

Becker is a slimeball to  try and pull this stunt. He will lose.

The reason he has lost so much to date is that he is a greedy, pompous, self important fool with a super inflated ego.  He didn't want to live within his means.

All he did was  his a tennis ball. He was paid for it. He thought he was so much  more

valuable than anything other than a PR piece.

My dogs chased tennis balls too. I gave them smoochies  and love in return and that was good enough for them.

His connections will not hold up with the passing of time. With each year, he becomes an older, bloated has been who doesn't understand that it's over.

Drop shots and lobs were not his best shots...

Rather a pathetic move to escape punishment of the law,  from a former champion who has fallen to the status of Mr Anybody
