Make the Health Ministry pay for drink driver blood tests, says foundation

The Anti Drink Driving Foundation is proposing that all costs associated with blood testing of drink drivers are borne by the Ministry of Public Health.

At present police are expected to front up the money for most of the tests and this is seen as an obstacle in the fight against drink driving, foundation said chief Dr Thaejing Siriphanich.

At present the Thai Health Promotion Foundation help the police out with costs but only on the seven deadly days associated with public holiday periods.

At other times of the year the police front up the money. Dr Thaejing said this leads to problems in prosecuting drivers and that the fight against drink driving needs to be an all year round battle

At the moment the annual cost is about 40 million baht a year or 800 - 1,200 per driver.

Dr Thaejing's foundation is proposing that the Ministry of Public Health take on the costs.

Daily News reported on the matter calling it "Blood tests - who is responsible?".

If the subject is found to be intoxicated then the subject pays. If the subject is found to be sober then the government pays.

Hmm, I can see a money-making scheme brewing there:

An exponential increase in drink-driving convictions? Only because the BIB have realised it pays.

Let pay every single guy in case the test is positive!

You know there are sophisticated machines out there used by many European Police Forces, which if maintained properly last for years and does the same job as expensiv e Blood Alcohol tests, only in certain circumstances do you want one of those. c arried out. The Police FGorensic labs are the palce where the evidence trail is certain , but then here, with Forensics taking a back seat so often I expect there are underfunded as well. Now if RTP got rid of half their GENERALS, probably pay for everything .
