Has anyone recently entered Thailand on a 30 tourist visa with a one way ticket. Possible, I used to enter fairly often on a one way ticket but have not done it for years. Due to return to Thailand and my retirement visa will have expired. want to return on a tourist visa, one way ticket and they apply for new retirement visa

Did you mean Tourist Visa, or 30 day visa exempt entry?

You would be unlucky to be challenged on a return ticket. In the highly unlikely event you are, just say that you intend to travel by land to Siem Reap after 3 weeks in Thailand.....

Entering the country shouldn't be any issue. IO's at the border would only be interested in an onward ticket if they were looking to deny entry for another reason like long term tourism.

The problem can be with the airline carrying you to Thailand. Airlines can, and some sometimes do, deny boarding if you don't have an onward flight dated within 30 days of entry and you are travelling without a visa. A ticket to anywhere should do, or (usually) you can buy one online when checking in if it's an issue. If you travel with an actual tourist visa the airline won't (at least shouldn't) insist on an onward flight.

I recently traveled on Scoot Airlines from Singapore to Chiang Mai (CNX). One way prepaid ticket bought from their site.
I do have a Thai visa but it was never asked for or checked. US passport.

As there is no 30 day visa that I am aware of, you are obviously referring to a visa exempt entry (no visa).\

Trying to do this with a one way ticket puts your fate in the hand of the airline staff at check-in.

They have every right to deny boarding.

And believe me this happens!

Being denied at the immigration checkpoint is very unlikely but also fully possible by the rules.

So best follow the advice to buy a cheap onward ticket or get a proper visa (a Non O for the easiest route to retirement extension).

Entering visa exempt or with a TR visa complicates the route to retirement extension.

I have a PE visa (Thailand Elite). The fact that I have a visa of any kind ( or not ) was never asked for or checked by Scoot airlines the counter girl just looked at the photo page once. The only reason I approached the counter was because the automated check-in kiosk said I had to go there for documents check. I thought it was for a visa grilling and credit card proffering but nothing asked.

First time on them A great flight , cheap fare a few minutes late. Due to a gate hold for clearance at SIN. I don’t mind LCC for a trip of that duration.

And then be asked for a proof (as happened to me).

And again: the OP misses the point anyway.

He wants to get a retirement extension in the end for which his planned approach is the worst.

  • 2 weeks later...

Again last week I flew from ICN to BKK on TG (Handler Asiana Airlines).

Another hassle free-check in one way ticket no check for visa or questions.

Is there something on my APIS profile that tells them I have a visa already?
