BANGKOK, 26th June 2018 (NNT) – The National Broadcast and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has decided to repackage 1800 Mhz frequency licenses into smaller permits and put them to auction alongside 900 Mhz licenses in August after a bidding session on June 15 saw no private sector bids.

NBTC Secretary-General Takorn Tantasit disclosed a meeting of the commission had decided to create 9 small-sized licenses for the 1800 Mhz frequency, with each to be only 5 Mhz of bandwidth. The frequency was originally divided into three licenses of 15 Mhz each. An online survey is to be conducted between today and June 28 before the concept is proposed to the main NBTC board on July 2.

Bidders will be able to seek up to four licenses under the new system with prices starting at 12.486 billion baht per license. Each bid will increase the price by 25 million baht with 2.5 billion baht required as a guarantee. The auction will take place in tandem with a bidding process for 900 Mhz licenses.

Both auctions are to be announced in the Royal Gazette on July 5 before bidders are invited to see documentation from July 6 to August 7 and register on August 8. August 9 to 13 will see bidders vetted, with eligible bodies being announced on August 15, after which demonstrations and rehearsals will take place on August 16 and 17. The 900 Mhz auction will happen on August 18, followed by the 1800 Mhz auction on August 19.
