Wife Stolen My Marriage Certificate

Featured Replies

My Thai wife has stolen/hidden my marriage certificate. Why would she do that? and how is it going to affect me in the future? We were married in BKK.

We have one kid, and live in Hong Kong. I have not let my kid go back to Thailand for 6 months now, for fear that she will not return. I have a pretty bad relationship with my wife, who is depressive - but wont seek medical help, though I have tried. Divorce is mentioned very regularly, but I'm not gonna let my kid go.

Cheers for any advice.

To get a replacement wedding certificate is easy and inexpensive. You need to show your marriage registration paper to divorce.

Next time you’re in Thailand go to a police station and file a report that you lost the certificate. Costs maybe 10 or 20 Baht and takes about 20 minutes depending on the queue and how fast the cop writes.

Take the police report to the Umphur office where you married and ask for a replacement certificate.

They will issue a certified copy of your marriage registration papers (not a replacement certificate). Get a couple of extras made just in case. Costs maybe 20 Baht per certified copy and takes minutes as well.

The marriage certificate is surely the property of both partners, not just YOUR property. I find your claim that your wife has STOLEN or hidden joint property to be very strange indeed.

You obviously fear that your wife intends to leave you and to take your child back to Thailand. Have you considered the child's best interests, here?

I am not at all sure that anyone on this forum can presume to advise you as we know so little about your situation. All you have told us is about your possessive attitude, your unhappy marriage, and your wife's depression. Perhaps these events are related?

When we married in LOS we received 2 wedding certificates, one for the husband & one for the wife. So this may be a case of her taking his copy of the wedding certificate as well as keeping her own, in which case I would be suspicious too.
