LONDON (Reuters) - Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb received a knighthood from Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, where he was honored for his services to music and charity.

The 71-year old, who began the hugely successful pop group with brothers Maurice and Robin in 1958, was knighted by Prince Charles as part of the Queen Elizabeth’s New Year’s Honours list.

“It’s the greatest honor you can receive obviously and I’m just blown away by the idea of it,” the musician said.

Gibb is the last remaining member of the band, known for hits such as “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever”.

They owe a lot to John Travolta. I wonder if we would even know them without that movie.

YOU may not have known them but they started in the music in the late 1950s.

The Bee Gees have sold more than 220 million records worldwide, making them one of the world's best-selling artists of all time.[3][4] They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997;[5] the presenter of the award to "Britain's first family of harmony" was Brian Wilson, historical leader of The Beach Boys, another "family act" featuring three harmonising brothers.[6] The Bee Gees' Hall of Fame citation says, "Only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold the Bee Gees.

Actually John Travolta owes a lot to the Bee Gees and Olivia Newron  John.

(Newton-John) :sorry:

Actually     I'd say John Travolta owes a lot to the Bee Gees and Olivia Newron John.

Exactly!        I'd say John Travolta has a debt of gratitude towards the Bee Gees.

BGs? Bar Girls?

I always remember the Kenny Everett "Massive Chewsets" comedy sketch.

The Bee Gees walk off the Clive Anderson because Barry got a strop. I know it goes on a bit, but still worth watching. They walked off because Barry said before they were called the BeeGees the were called the 'Les Tossiers' to which Clive replied "you will always be tossiers to me" ???

I remember watching it at the time. The Bee Gees' manager got them a spot on the show but didn't warn them about Anderson's style of humour.

A lot of people, including me (and maybe Anderson too) thought they were joking.

It was just some banter. Seems like Barry is the one with the ego problem.

Yes I watched it live at the time, their (Barry) lack of sense of humour put me off them. Barry came across as a pretentious prat.

While I like their music. The whole queens honors list is a lot of rubbish mainly for the rich and famous. There are thousands of people out there in the real world that work hard all of their lives and get no recognition from anyone, but wait if you live to be a hundred you get a letter from the queen. BIG DEAL.!!!

If you take the time to read the entire list you will see that hunderds of people are honoured, not only the rich and famous.

Barry gave Kenny Everett a thumbs up, as did Rod Stewart despite initially getting the hump over what they saw as career-damaging sketches. As for Clive Anderson; I too was watching & was a bit miffed. Barry later blamed stress and other matters in a later interview but I don't think he fully put it to bed in the eyes of his fans.

He did at least have the grace to appear in OFAH ?

John Travolta owes a lot to them. Try listening to other hits of theirs such as "Spicks and Specks" or "Too much Heaven". An iconic pop group.

It's got to be a British thing, in Canada I don't remember any one being a fan, except for the disco era. After that they were just the band that came and went.

I did however win a dance contest in grade 7 to one of their songs. I can't for the life of me remember which one though. I do remember the pretty brunette who danced with me though.
