Crime Major Haul of Contraband Cigarettes Seized at Thai-Cambodian Border Market
Picture courtesy of Amarin Authorities have seized a massive haul of illegal cigarettes, with the estimated tax revenue loss to the state exceeding 32 million baht. The operation was carried out by a joint task force of military and security units operating in the border province of Chanthaburi. At a press briefing held at 16:00 on 1 July at the 522nd Marine Ranger Company in Chab Taree village, Pong Nam Ron district, the Chanthaburi Marine Task Force, under the Border Protection Command for Chanthaburi and Trat, detailed the seizure of 26,050 cartons of untaxed cigarettes. The cigarettes, both foreign and domestic brands, were discovered hidden inside a locked and abandoned rental room located within a trade facilitation zone at the Chab Taree border market. The operation began during a routine patrol when officers noticed unusual activity around a unit previously believed to be vacant. The door was padlocked from the outside, raising suspicions. After securing permission, the patrol team forced entry and discovered the contraband stashed inside. Officers from the Chanthaburi Excise Department, Immigration Police, Customs Department and market administration joined the inspection. Upon examination, they confirmed that none of the cigarettes had undergone customs clearance, nor had any excise taxes been paid. The seized contraband was taken into custody, and an investigation is now underway to identify the smuggling network responsible for the illicit importation and distribution of untaxed tobacco products along the Thai-Cambodian border. Authorities are now preparing to expand the investigation in an effort to dismantle the wider smuggling operation believed to be behind the stockpile. The dramatic tax loss of 32,718,800 baht highlights the ongoing challenge faced by border enforcement agencies in tackling cross-border smuggling and black-market trade. Officials have vowed to increase patrols and intelligence efforts in known high-risk areas and have called for greater cooperation between local businesses and law enforcement to prevent future smuggling attempts. Community Poh Teck Tung Foundation Partners with DDPM to Train USAR Teams

The Poh Teck Tung Foundation has joined forces with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) to conduct a specialised training course on Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) for its disaster relief teams. The training aims to enhance the skills and capabilities of volunteers to meet international standards in disaster response, helping communities more effectively. The course ran from 23 June to 2 July 2025 at the Civil Defence Volunteer Training Centre in Chai Nat Province. Mr. Surapong Techharuvijit, committee member and deputy secretary-general of the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, together with Mr. Surapong Sertpakdee, committee member and deputy treasurer, presided over the certificate presentation ceremony for participants who successfully completed the programme. The USAR course was organised jointly by the Poh Teck Tung Foundation and the DDPM, under the Ministry of Interior. It provided intensive training to improve knowledge and practical skills related to urban search and rescue operations, based on global standards. Participants reviewed methods of structural inspection, assessment of cracks, building damage evaluation, and initial emergency access and repairs. Practical sessions included techniques to reduce the risk of structural collapse, use of search markings and operational procedures involving search and rescue dogs (K9 units). Experts including Mr. Kriksak San Wasa Siri, Director of the Special Operations Search and Rescue Division at DDPM and Associate Professor Dr. Thanet Weerasiri, President of the Engineering Council, along with other specialists, served as instructors throughout the course. Also present were Mr. Aran Totuad, General Manager of Poh Teck Tung Foundation, Ms. Natkan Khamkhom, Human Resources and Training Manager and Ms. Pimnapat Sunthornthitiwong, Corporate Communications Manager, who observed the training. Recognising the vital importance of developing disaster relief personnel to international standards, the Poh Teck Tung Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the DDPM. This collaboration focuses on integrating academic knowledge and operational experience to strengthen the capabilities of staff and volunteers, ensuring efficient and effective emergency response management. The foundation first introduced the USAR training programme in 2023 and has since applied this expertise successfully in assisting victims, notably during the earthquake in March 2025. For over 115 years, the Poh Teck Tung Foundation has expanded its scope beyond providing relief to the disadvantaged, regardless of race or religion, to also focus on staff development and comprehensive public welfare projects. Crime Ten Thai Construction Workers Flee Cambodia After Being Cheated of Wages

Ten Thai construction workers who had been lured to Phnom Penh, Cambodia with promises of steady employment and daily wages were intercepted by Thai military officers in the early hours of 2 July, after fleeing their workplace due to being cheated on wages and confiscation of their identification cards. At approximately 00:30, officers from the 1201st Ranger Company, under the 12th Ranger Regiment Task Force, in collaboration with Aranyaprathet Special Task Force (Burapha Force), apprehended the group of men as they attempted to scale the roof of a private car park and buildings, near the Ban Khlong Luek permanent border crossing in Aranyaprathet district, Sakaeo province. Preliminary investigations revealed that the workers had been recruited via Facebook to work at a construction site in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, with the promise of 300 baht per day in wages. However, after completing a full month of work, the employer refused to pay their wages and confiscated their national ID cards. The workers were eventually abandoned in Poipet, just across the border from Thailand. The group told officials, tearfully, that after being dropped off in Poipet, they were approached by a guide who demanded 3,000 baht each to smuggle them back into Thailand. With no money to pay, the workers chose to risk crossing the border illegally on their own, eventually attempting to climb back into Thailand via the car park roof before being discovered by border patrol. The soldiers took the group to the 1201st Ranger Company headquarters, located at the Ban Khlong Luek border crossing, for questioning and documentation. All ten individuals were later handed over to Khlong Luek Police Station for legal processing and assistance.
