Big Joke at the double! He's busting tailor, jewelry and rip off travel scams

The Thai Tourist Police Bureau reported that their star man - crime buster Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakpal - led a large police operation in smashing gangs of touts and shop owners running scams involving jewelry, suits and tours.

The TPB said that the shops were in league with Tuk-Tuk drivers and other touts to rip-off tourists by getting them to pay inflated prices for goods and services.

The website posted pictures of the Major General known as Big Joke for his multi-faceted crime busting exploits. He was shown in front of picture boards showing the latest investigations at the Phraratchawang police station in the historic heart of Bangkok.

The area is visited by many tourists who often fall prey to unscrupulous scam artists.

The scams mention were long standing ones in the capital including tailor scams and jewelry scams.

Many people face charges and the following tailors are being prosecuted:

Thewes Fashion, James Fashion, B.B. Fashion Ram Fashion International and Wasana.

In addition a travel group called Royal Traveling Co Ltd will also be prosecuted.

This one policeman is doing what every other policeman in Thailand "should" be doing, proper proactive policework which in general Thai police don't seem to have any concept

Hopefully he is showing a very good example and hopefully the way forward

Unfortunately, just about the time he makes a real dent in the corruption, he'll be brought up on bogus charges and transferred to an inactive post, sued (and prosecuted) for defamation, or gunned down in his driveway.

It's that old "silver or lead" incentive program.  I just can't see it changing in our lifetimes, though I hope I'm wrong.

He gets the honor, but he can't do it alone. For sure he has a big team working for him in the background on all kind of cases, otherwise it's impossible to discover and solve every case within a few days. Bravo to his team!

Someone standing out front of Wat Pho said it was closed when in fact it was actually open; they might look into that.

Yes but can he dive in a cave?

These scams have been going on and reported to the local constabulary for decades without any action being taken against the perpetrators.  The person handling currently the situation should receive a mighty thank you from one and all if he is successful in fulfilling this task.  At least he appears to be doing his best to clean up some of the riff-raff that prey on unsuspecting tourists.

Remarks such as the one posted by sammieuk1 are uncalled for.

Nice to see somebody finally dropping a hammer on James Tailor. Really one of the rudest and worst shops. And shame that tourists on their first visit here won't likely suss that there is NO reason to go to a far area of Sukothai Rd to find a tailor. Besides to be blatantly ripped off.

Dear Big Joke, that problem is not only in Bangkok!

Every one loves to have hand made shirts and suits..  I had them made for me in Hong Kong..the Indian Tailor comes with samples and measurements are done respectfully...... fitting...and refitting and again...and they were so chilled out about payments!!!.... And in Jermynn Street in London....I don't venture out to those slimy Indian Tailor shops.in Bankok...the few times I passed by and the nasty behaviour made me run....fast....

It's just a show. Others do the job and he gets the publicity.....Why only him???

I am looking forward to seeing reports of the sentences these miscreants receive, but somehow the publicity always stops at the arrests.

This leads me to fear that the effort is not carried through to any successful conclusion.

Next bust, Immigration offices.......

The man is on a publicity crusade. It has little to do with the work of his force. If you don't see that, then you have been fooled as I suspect many Thai people have been. Think of all the extra crimes that could be solved if he wasn't spending all of his time in the limelight.

In Canada they have spokespeople who talk to the media. They don't have police chiefs beating their chests about the cases they have solved. And I suspect that is the case in most countries.
