CHIANG RAI, 3 July 2018 (NNT) – Farmers in the area of Luang cave in Chiang Rai province have assured they are ready to take on water being drained out of the cave to save the 13 lives inside.

Chiang Rai Agriculture Official Sukchai Jriangprasert has met with farmers in the three Chiang Rai sub-districts of Sri Muang Chum, Pongpha and Baan Dai.

The combined area is home to 101 farmers and 1,397 Rai of farmland impacted by recent rains or 8.39 percent of a registered 907 farming households tending to 16,646 Rai of land. Nonetheless, all of the affected farmers have assured that they will take on water being drained from inside Luang cave for the sake of the rescue operation for Moo Pa Academy youth football team. Thirteen members of the team including their coach have been trapped inside the cave for over nine days.

Rice fields are able to be submerged for between 10-15 days and Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osot-tanakorn has said he will declare any area damaged by the operation a disaster zone so that 1,113 baht per Rai in reparations can be provided as per Ministry of Finance regulations.

The affected farmers have remarked they only want to see the 12 children and their coach rescued as soon as possible.

By The Nation

Farmers in three tambon in Chiang Rai whose farmland is flooded by water drained from theTham Luang Cave will get a compensation of Bt1,100 per rai, the agriculture minister said on Tuesday.

Agriculture Minister Krissada Boonraj said the Chiang Rai governor reported to him that so far 1,600 rai of farmland in three tambon was inundated.

Krissada said officials will survey the damage as more water would be pumped out as efforts continue to rescue the trapped footballers.

Krissada said the province's emergency fund of Bt50 million will be used to pay compensations to the farmers as soon as possible, without having to seek an aPproval from the Cabinet.

He said the Agriculture Ministry will also hand out rice grains to affected villagers so they can replant their paddy fields.

The Royal Irrigation Department has also been instructed to study how to drain the water from the paddy fields.

The floodwaters may be channeled to the Kham River and Mae Sai River, the minister added.
