I have a friend who forgot to renew his WP that expired about a month ago. His current visa extension was obtained based on his expired WP and still has around 6 more months left.

He has the multi entry allowance, and he wonders what sort of trouble he will get into by leaving the country (by plane) and trying to use the multi entry when coming back.

Is he technically on overstay already? Will immigration at the airport know about this?

Some people told him he is already on overstay due to an expired WP.

Technically yes but in reality no. Immigration would not be aware his work permit had expired. No problem on entry to the country.

He needs to get the new work permit as soon as possible.

Thanks, so he will be fine re-entering the country and then applying to a new WP on that same visa without them questioning?

Yes

But his work permit should of already been applied for by now if he is still in the country.

Interesting. If I got fired and forgot to cancel my work permit, I'd be able to stay until the end of my visa.

Actually I've done this before but some here say otherwise.

People have done it but I don't recommend doing it.

Your extension is not tied to the work permit but it is tied to your job. Having a valid work permit is needed to apply for the extension.
