The Japanese infantry were issued with them in ww2 so alot came back to western countries with soldiers. Not worth much but the proper hereditary samurai ones are meant to have papers inside them. You can pull off the bit at the top of the handle and there is meant to be a scroll inside with the names of the different owners. So I was told anyway-never seen.
