Some 4,000 volunteers joined the "Big Cleaning" day activity initiated by His Majesty the King at Tham Luang in Chiang Rai province on Saturday morning to restore its natural beauty.

The work to restore the landscape of Tham Luang and the area around the Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park in Mae Sai district started at 9am, presided over by AM Suphichai Sunthornbura, deputy secretary-general of the Royal Household Bureau.

The volunteers were those who had registered under the “We Do Good Things With Heart” programme initiated by the King.

In addition to cleaning and improving the landscape in front of and inside the Tham Luang cave, the volunteers also helped restore the natural surroundings at Pha Mee and Kiew Khor Nang where rescue workers had built dykes to divert water from the cave. The dykes were removed to restore the same natural ecosystem.

The volunteers also restored and improved the landscape of Tham Sai Thong cave where several holes were dug to drain water.

They also cleaned three temples where troops had stayed during the rescue operation.

Restoration of the natural landscape is expected to take two days.

At 9.09am on Monday, new Chiang Rai Governor Prajon Pratsakul will hold a religious rite to make merit for former Navy SEAL Saman Kunan, who died during the rescue operation, and to make offerings to sacred spirits at the national park.

Yup.  What a mess the drive was into the airport area.  ?

I was going to volunteer, but I'm pretty sure cleaning is a reserved occupation.

fully agree. the sheer mass-hysteria in thais has everything todo with poor education, zero critical thinking, inflated feelings of nationality (read: superiority) and the fact that groups activities are considered sanook. ps. the honcho that delivered the shirts and hats will have an extra bottle of black "laben" (sic) tonight ?

Getting ready for the onslaught of tourists who are expect to flock there soon thanks to all the recent publicity.

Should have done all the cleaning years ago, before the horse bolted.

Still, it's a start, but it'll take 50-odd years to get Thailand into a fit destination for high-quality tourists.. Until then I suppose it's backpackers and Chinese all the way...

Great start. Now........go continue with both coastlines on the Andaman and Thai Gulf, that would be impressive.

Good grief!

Jesus Wept.

 There's always a couple.

If it rains it pours. Glass half empty.

Moan winge carp.

Do you guys ever have anything good to say about anything? Serious question.

Re the OP, best of luck, you are trying your best, also it's the thought that counts.

I have only been living here for 20 years. I only comment when I feel it is necessary and read such trash

Good to see that everyone wants to contribute and have found a way to do so productively....despite the traffic issues.
