BANGKOK — Thailand marked the beginning of Buddhist Lent on Friday with ceremonies nationwide.

In Surin province, in the northeast, 67 monks rode 34 elephants to accept alms from devout Buddhists, an event also aimed at attracting tourists and officiated by the provincial administrative authorities. The Monks resolved to donate all dry food received to those affected by the collapse of a hydroelectric dam Monday in Laos.

"...aimed at attracting tourists..."

Yes, I think that was what Buddha was going for...

Math question in the locals next term:  "If 67 monks rode 34 elephants, how many elephants had only one monk?"  Or was that "one trunk"?

I went to the Surin elephant festival 40 years ago and rode one back into town.  Funny to watch them play soccer with a huge ball, or do a tug-of-war with 40 soldiers.

Another plastic bag fest , foam bowels and plastic cutlery for easy mindless convienence...

Sure the tourists will have a wonderful sober time.

My new toast - "To the Buddhist Lent".

No such thing as Buddhist Lent.

"Thailand marked the beginning of Buddhist Lent on Friday with ceremonies nationwide."

Another national holiday. That means only one thing for sure. Lots of people using the roads will be moving on to their next lives.
