At least 7 killed, 2 missing in Nan mudslide

At least seven villagers were killed and two others missing after heavy rains triggered a mudslide from a mountain into their valley village in the Bo Klua district of Nan province on Saturday morning.

The authorities were alerted to the landslide at the Ban Huay Kham in Tambon Dong Phaya at 7am.

Colonel Ratana Patanasophon, commander of the task force of the 32nd Ranger Regiment, rushed rangers under his command to the scene to retrieve the bodies and search for the missing.

Ratana said the mudslide buried four houses in the village.

He said operations to search for the missing were hampered by continuous heavy rains. Moreover, the mudslide had knocked down a power cable as a result the rescuers did not have electricity for use of some equipment.

Rescue workers dug up the bodies of seven people who were buried in a mudslide that hit a village in the Bo Kluea district of Nan province on Saturday morning.

Prasit Dusneewong, an official of the Bo Klua district, said rescue workers were still trying to locate the body of one person who lived in one of the four houses buried by the mudslide in the Ban Huay Khab village.

Prasit said the mudslide, triggered by hours of heavy rains, occurred at 6.10am. Eight villagers were reported missing. Rescuers used bulldozers and needed almost five hours to dig up the bodies of the seven.

May I ask why they do not bring portable generators as part of the rescue equipment ??

R.I.P. to the Deceased, but was deforestation and poor land management a probable cause....

Looking at the centre photo the cut for the road most likely left the hillside with no support. Digging further back for the houses might have added to the problem.

R.I.P the dead.

I hope none of the family saw the body being dragged up the road.

My TW has been in Tha Wang Pah since Thursday , TWP is about half way between Nan and Pua , can't find Bo Kluea on my map of LoS.  Note to self  ' Ask about mudslide '  should she bother to ring me as her phone is off. Not too sure when she is coming home to up here but I am now running out of clean cups !

Useful to have brought a portable generator, then.

Tragedy........

Yet another blot on Thai health and safety.

Deforestation is one of the prime causes of land slips.

Emergency services in Thailand are just a mish-mash of disparate well meaning and unprepared amateurs...they didn't even have a generator.

Thailand needs to take a long hard look at theurbemergency services and their attitude to health and safety in general.

Thousands of people are needlessly looking their lives every year/month/week/day in Thailand because of this fatalistic outlook by those in authority.
