What kind of bird is this that flew into my window?

Featured Replies

Looks like a bird of prey of some sort.  I'm not a birder, so not quite sure.

Beautiful!

No idea what he is but definitely a raptor of some sort, is it injured?

Hopefully placing the beastie on a tree branch will enable him to return to his natural environment.

Looking is like a hawk or kite of some sort. Beautiful.

I will go with a juvenile shikra. I am not 100% confident. Your location within Thailand would help. Also your proximity to jungle would assist.

A shikra is an accipiter. If you are from the UK, you'll know the sparrowhawk, which is the common accipiter there.

give or take the relative ages in between the birds in the respective images... this one is a Crested Goshawk (Taiwan image)

The foot is an important part of the survival of the raptor. Only the one-legged Crested Goshawk has no survival ability. It can only be euthanized after veterinary evaluation. Wildlife Remembrance/Provided

what about the claws/legs?

the dimensions of the beak and eyes (shape and angles) appear to differ a little...

Yeah, I'd go with Crested Goshawk.

Interesting encounter indeed.

all is good unless you ever cop an Owl trying to Claw through the birdcage, to rip budgie's heads off

Could that be down to the fact that he has just had a "head on "with the window?

?

Seriously, I'm impressed. Sometimes there are some real gems on TVF!

I'm going to go with this one.  Looking at my image in the OP, claws and talons look to be the same.  Bird was real calm, maybe due to him banging his head.  We released him next door in an empty field with some coverage and a couple hours later he was gone, so hoping he turned out alright.

If you are happy to say, which province in Thailand is this and how far are you from jungle? (The crested goshawk is not going to stray too far from jungle. It is not really found in towns or agricultural land away from its natural habitat.)

I live in Phuket, and there is some jungle here although I can't say I'm in the middle of jungle.

Phuket very much shifts the probability to Crested Goshawk. Plenty of suitable habitat there for this species.

I also had one one of these guys fly into my darkened reflective picture window on the southern side of the house.

I don't think it is a Blyth's hawk-eagle. It doesn't have an obvious crest. The uppertail has the wrong pattern. It is too small. It lacks obvious belly barring. I think a crested goshawk is more likely.

Troll post removed.

What a beautiful bird. I hope he or she can be released back to the wild.

Can nobody see, this bird has a broken leg,and a one legged bird

especially a raptor is not going to survive long in the wild,

caught in a trap maybe ? a shame.

I think you may be looking at the second photo which is just a photo for comparison from Tifino. The original bird is in the first photo.

I hope thats the MIL and not the wife holding it

Even birds of prey in Thailand are as harmless as some humans, don't you just love this holy land.

Accipiters (hawks) have yellow  eyes. Falcons have brown eyes. This appears to be a falcon. Eastern Marsh Harrier might be close - common winter visitor.

Its nice to see Marian getting some mileage out of the old cutains

A Shikra! One of them killed my caged zebra dove through the cage bars. The dove was rescued as a chick when it was being eaten by red ants..
