What exactly is cheaper there?

A simple soup costs 30-40THB in Thailand, In Vietnam this costs about 30k to 40k VND = 43 to 57THB

A bottle of water in a supermarket in Thailand costs about 13 THB, in Vietnam about 16 THB

You find a similar price difference in nearly all every day things

In Bangkok you can easily find a nice hotel for under 1000THB, in Hanoi or HCM that's not impossible, but way more difficult, and often the room is then quite small.

The only thing that i'm aware of which is indeed cheaper in Vietnam are fake clothes, because the fake clothes sold in Thailand mostly come from Vietnam.

I'm told a 450ml of Saigon Green beer costs 60c in a bar (20bht, 15Kdong), you can keep your soup and water.

My pals were staying in aircon double rooms with breakfast included on September 23 Park, HCMC for 550kdong (600bht).

Water, electricity, rent, internet, satellite, beer, wine, food, transport, 4G for 'phone. All the major cost items.

Granted, international schooling is more expensive.

I've lived in both Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Where are the nice hotels in Bangkok for under B1,000?

A few years since i was in Vientiane (for a visa run) and i did find hotels more expensive than Thailand, food in the hotel rather poor and shopping mediocre and no cheaper. Of course, if you stay a while i am sure you can find better deals and a lot of what i saw was aimed at the visa market.

The number of centrally located hotels on something like Agoda is much more limited and i think there were only about half a dozen under 1000 baht. The first room we were given was crap, and we had to demand a better one, which we eventually got. Still mediocre by Udon Thani standards. Last time i let my wife book! Tuk-tuks and taxis were maybe slightly more.

Street food along the river about same as Thailand, Markets all the same stuff at slightly higher prices in Laos. Beer cheaper. Part of the problem is not enough competition to force prices down, and not enough investment in maintenance. Probably cheaper out of the capital but i think even then sometimes not as not much choice, I am not a backpacker!

The duty free shopping at the Friendship bridge was the best bit!

Well, that depends on what you consider nice. I only stay there briefly if meeting relatives or on Embassy business, or flying in and out and staying overnight. Just want a clean room, decent bathroom, aircon and a comfortable bed - a TV  with English language channel and internet also preferred, Never had to pay 1,000 baht so far .....

What hotels and what areas?

Not much nice downtown for under $1,000 that I’ve seen.

Sorry, plenty under $1,000, under THB1,000 not so much...

Wish i could afford a $1,000  ......

Last 4 trips i made, 2 hotels, both in the 800-900 baht range. I usually pick something within easy reach of Swampy. I use Plai Gardens if just an overnight stay as they do swampy pickups and drop offs, and Nasa Vegas if wanting public transport to town and Swampy.
