Hi fellow 2 wheelers.

 

I'm seeking experienced advice on replacing the tyres on my Honda Click.

 

They are due soon, so my wife spoke to a customizer cum repair shop in our local town who quoted her 3,000 THB for the pair.

 

That sounded reasonable to me, but she reckoned they were a bit pricy (although I don't think she's ever actually bought any tyres!) and suggested we talk to the Honda dealer in Sakon Nakhon.

 

I've just returned from said dealer with a verbal quote of 17,000 THB for the pair!

 

Can there really be such a huge price disparity between a local repair shop and a downtown dealer?

 

And the deeper and maybe the more relevant question. What kind of boots can I expect to end up with for 3,000 THB?

 

Like to hear your views folks.

2000 baht for a set of scoot tyres is enough. 

I am pretty sure I paid less than 1000B for a Michelin tire for my 150cc bike...

Talk about falang pricing, hole crap! Sorry but that's WAY WAY out of proportion for a bike tire. Did you talk to a Honda car dealer? ?

That WAS the Honda dealer! But, as I suspected from yours and other comments, there could be a language issue here.

 

I shall return next week with madam Moon in tow. Maybe 17,000 actually meant 1,700. Perhaps I should have asked him to write it down.

Jeez.

Tyres for the Wave are about 7-900 baht a pair depending on quality and brand name.

Tubeless tyres for the mag wheel KSR/Scooby's run around 1200-1500 baht a pair depending on the above.

Both the above prices - fitted.

Hell you can get a pair of sexy custom mag wheels for less than 3k.

Somebody has got the wrong end of the stick or is being seriously ripped!

Returned to the Honda dealer this morning with madam Moon on the pillion.

 

They all had a good laugh when the maintenance boss realized his mistake.

 

Got new a pair of boots for 1,700 THB and they threw in a free rearview mirror for my troubles.

 

All's well that ends well as they say.

Maxxis tires are about 1300 a pair for a PCX, in my opinion they are ok

1500-2000thb  is just about right for scooter tires. 2k might give you a michellin or a pirelli, much better ones..3k way over priced

Tires are the only thing connecting you with the road so not really a place to be cheap.

Thanks for the advice. But I wasn't looking for cheap, I was looking for right. And I'd figured that the right thing to do was to visit the Honda dealer. After all, I've  had 4 years of excellent service out of my Click, so it really should  be a no brainer.

 

As it turned out, I was right and once we'd resolved the language issue, (i.e. a thousand has three zeros, not two!) I'm now whizzing around on a pair of new 'original fit' tyres with the same confidence that I've always had.

Based on my experience, the stock (IRC?)tires from Honda are not actually the best tires for performance. Some people change them as soon as they'e out of the dealer.  But they will suffice just fine, been using mine for 2 years without any problem before I changed to a much better tires. Especially if you don't ride in wet conditions that much, theyre just fine.

Deestones are good all round tyres for scoots, racing tyres and slicks are best for performance if you enter your Click into a race.

I want better grip esp on wet roads even if I'm not racing. And no, we shouldn't use racing tires for daily commute. 

A Click  and a Stead are very different models, no?

Yes, the Michellin Citygrip and the Pirelli diablo are two of the best I've tried on my scoot so far.

Thanks for the tips. We are doing a lot more mileage now we're living out of town, so the next change will come a lot sooner than before. I'll do my homework in advance.

 

Are these tyres that you recommend tubeless? I already have mag wheels as per my avatar. My only real complaint about stock tyres is their porosity. I have pump them up pretty regularly.

Yes, tubeless.  I always check my tire pressure every two weeks, and normally I need to pump a few psi of air once every month.

That sounds good to me. It's an improvement on 5-6 PSI per week, that's for sure!

Your'e welcome. Stock HONDA tires are actually not bad and there are many other factors that can cause tires to lose some pressures i.e changes in temperature, valve leaks, etc.

I had a pucture in the rear tyre of my Honda PCX and since both tyres were near their end of life anyway i decided to just replace them (one maxxis front tyre lasted about as long as two rear tyres)

After asking a few shops i saw that here in Udon i don't have much choice regarding tyres, so i opted for IRC tyres (i think it are the stock tyres), which cost me 1560 THB for the pair (also got some new valves, 100THB for the pair). Then i had to take them to another shop to get them changed which cost me 120 THB
