Commerce Min sees bright outlook for Hom Mali exports

 

 

BANGKOK, 6th August 2018 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce is confident that Hom Mali rice exports will continue to expand, especially in the United States, which is Thailand’s largest export market for Hom Mali rice. 

Deputy Commerce Minister Chutima Bunyapraphasara said last week that during the first six months of 2018, Thailand exported more than 220,000 tons of Hom Mali rice, worth 250 million US dollars, to the United States. The volume represents an increase of 2.8 percent over the same period of last year. 

Chutima led a trade mission, comprising members of the public and private sectors to the United States, from 22nd to 26th July 2018. The visit was undertaken to publicize Thai rice and boost trade cooperation with US rice importers. With information collected about the Thai-US rice market, the trade mission soon foresaw more opportunities for Thai rice exports to the United States. 

The Ministry of Commerce plans to organize more road shows overseas to expand marketing channels for Thai rice products. It will later take a trade mission to Singapore and Australia, as well as joining major trade fairs, such as the China-ASEAN Expo 2018. 

Between January 1st and 20th July 2018, Thailand exported 6.15 million tons of rice, worth 3,100 million US dollars, an increase of 20 percent. Thailand expects to export 10 million tons of rice this year. 

Hom Mali, or Thai jasmine rice, is the leading Thai rice and makes up the highest volume of rice exports. It has been named the best rice in the world and is in great demand overseas. The brand Hom Mali is well-known worldwide, and is especially sought after in the high-end market.
