Thailand - Not for me

I have planned my move for 10 years and at the end it seems I lasted barely 5.

I have been back to Toronto for just over one month. Even though I'm experiencing a culture shock of epic proportions, even though I don't know a single soul in this city (long story as all my family and friends are in the French province) I have very little desire to go back to Thailand.

I paid the balance of my mortgage for what is a tiny box in the sky in fantastic location. While I was in Thailand the place got developed so much, the property prices have also doubled and there is literally no one over 30 where I live (I stick out like a sore thumb). Women are absolutely and phenomenally good looking (there is just no comparison with Thai women and I feel sorry for the guys lying to themselves) and I got no chance with any of them....it's rather depressing the whole situation...yet I still want to stay. As a matter of fact, looking at all these young people living in half million one bedroom condos with their hot girlfriends makes me wonder why would any fool move to Thailand and waste their life? For what really? Visa runs, subpar Western food and dirty air?

I left my wife in Thailand and after a few Facebook chats I feel very depressed about her not seeing long term benefits of living in a first world country. She's scared to leave her job and she's scared to be poor. All valid concerns, but she doesn't understand that as almost a middle-aged woman she can still get a chance living in Canada. I have given up rather early as I know all too well Thai mindset can not be changed and bringing her here would be a long term mistake ending in divorce.

So, here I am alone again.

Waiting for the obligatory "don't let the door..."

Bottled it big time, the guy who lived rent free with his wife as a joint bread winner and he Bottled it. Reckon there's much more to this story than your willing to admit.

Enjoy the view, don't get any ideas.

No, there isn't. I had a tenant living in my place for the past 4 years and paying my mortgage. He moved out and I moved in. The plan is (was?) to fix up the place a bit and charge more rent. I also have some health issues that are worse in Thailand.I just don't want to go back to a filthy country anymore.

If you think there is anything else you can add it to the story with your vivid imagination.

What a hell does it mean "bottled it??"

Nah, I'll stick around and there is nothing you can do about it.

Gotta do the obligatory Thailand flounce.

This is strictly between you and your wife. If she does not want to move, well you both have a big problem. I have seen this before happen. Some girls can cope and some will not with a big move. I think if you are thinking of going home, you are only thinking of yourself. I know my wife would not cope in Australia so I had to make a choice between my wife and my home. My wife won out and believe me, I have a good life in Australia. If you think she cannot cope, well you have some mighty big choices to make.

For me, it depends on how much you love your wife (and you are talking about smoking hot women back home already?) and how much she loves you. If you are thinking Thailand is filthy and you cannot cope, you got big problems. Home can be anywhere in this world as long as you are both happy. I have big health issues and much better off in Australia but you will have to make a choice and I am glad I am not in your position.

Best of luck.

You mean whinge and complain? For what purpose? Why do folks whinge and complain about Thailand anyway? Nobody forces folks to go there or live there.....

I like Toronto, lived there off and on ....like Thailand it has its pros and cons..

1. The weather blows

2. The traffic sucks.

3. Its politically like San Francisco, but I dont think Canadian folks poop on the streets, do they?

4. The Maple Leafs are shee it.

5. The Canadian Ballet was wonderful, but no take out.

The world is forever changing. As a fellow Torontonian, I can relate well to your "tiny box in the sky". And if that is truly you in the avatar, yes, you would "stick out like a sore thumb", and I am not speaking of your age. Now this statement, coming from the mouth of one who has lived in Toronto all his life, this one I really disagree with, "Women are absolutely and phenomenally good looking (there is just no comparison with Thai women and I feel sorry for the guys lying to themselves)". Holy mother!

Enjoy your condo, bitter cold will arrive in a few months (as you already know) and it will hang around for almost 6 months. Don't watch too much local news as the daily (lately) gun violence will depress you.

As you settle in, I'll settle out (to Thailand) and cease my many previous long flights to the land of beautiful women and great food.

I salute Thailand !

(character size would just not equalize. Kind of like Toronto women and Thai women .... unequalled)

Some people can be happy anywhere they are.

Some people can not be happy no matter where they are.

Thailand brings out the best of both.

Thailand is not for everyone. I do agree that by living here, we are giving up some things. For me, the culture part of the equation is a sacrifice. I would love to be able to have access to great live jazz, stand up comedy, the ballet, art museums, and other such luxuries. I definitely do not have them here, with the exception of MOMA in Bangkok, which is outstanding, but there are only so many times I can visit!

However, some of us enjoy a very good life here. On my relatively modest income and savings, I live a whole lot better here, than I would in the US. I like most of the people here, and find most to be far more pleasant, light hearted, fun, helpful, and kind, than the average American I run into back there. I also like the food here, though I miss the sheer variety back there, and the ease of travel within the region. There are alot of other aspects of life here I enjoy. Granted, I have a wonderful wife, who is delightful to be around on a daily basis, and that is after many years of being together. Granted, we could live in the US. But we would both be bored to tears there, very quickly. As I said, Thailand it is not for everyone. You have to be able to overlook alot of nonsense here. And you have to be light hearted, and not take things too seriously. And be very adaptable.

Though I do enjoy the cleanliness back in the states, much of the rest of the lifestyle leaves me cold. Just take the malls for example. Here, the malls are downright entertaining. I can spend hours at Siam, or Central in Bangkok, and just admire the gorgeous gals, the selection of foods, and the vibrant life within them. In the US the malls are dull, fabulously uninteresting, lifeless, devoid of flavor, sterile, and have horrendous food, overpriced cinemas, and alot of really unattractive people. Not much bird watching!

The sheer predictability of every day life back there is mind numbing for me. And the cost of living is staggering, these days. Whoever says inflation is low in the US, is lying through their teeth!

I hope and I pray I never have to live in the US again. In my opinion the quality of life is dropping by the day. I love it here and hope to spend my dying days here.

Its a UK expression basically meaning being on the verge of doing something and then backing out at the last moment due to being unsure of afraid. After reading your post I don't think it applies in your case.

The "cold" and the "muffin" future are what started me looking at Thailand some years ago, mainly the cold.

You would be surprised how many foreigners talk shit about the Thai male attitude and do a runner from their kid(s) and wife themselves, because they can't heck it.

You planned the move to Thailand for ten years, yet you seem surprised with the reality!

I also spent many years in preparation for a move to Thailand, but didn't get surprised at what I found.  I expected to find tropical weather, crowds, different foods, dirty streets and air. The crooked politics and rife corruption was more than expected, but something I could ignore, or use to advantage. I've never thought whining could change it, nor that things would magically become more like the western version of crooked politics and corruption.

I was smart enough to know glamorous woman were out of reach for my age, where ever I resided. I knew some differences in age were very acceptable in this country, and that for me, at my age, Thai women were an infinitely better prospect than the self absorbed, me too, all men are shit, me, me, me versions at home.

My lady wont be appearing as a bleached glamour girl in any of the soaps here, but she enjoys sex just for what it is, is hard working and has some old fashioned values.  We both understand that my funds give us both a good lifestyle here, and that she will look after our more basic needs until I go to the ovens.

If you prefer living in a small box in the sky surrounded by young people who discriminate by age, and can only lust after other men's wives but never touch, you really wasted that ten years of planning!

There you go. I also don't know why anyone willingly puts up with the insane 90 day immigration nonsense and their insane address reporting regulations. Different strokes for different folks. I guess some don't mind being caged and herded. I enjoy freedom.

A report every 90 days that you can do online, and renewing a retirement extension once a year? Oh yeah, it's a bloody nightmare!

Panama thank you.

Sometimes Thailand works, did for me for a decade, then it didn't and I moved back home.

I was a little fortunate that my wife had already lived in Chicago when she was at college, so she knew what she was in for when we came back.

Try to get her a tourist visa, have her visit Canada for a few weeks. A lot of Thai's I know are terrified that they think it snows all year round, and much more importantly, that they won't be able to eat Thai food!

Well calm her nerves and tell her my wife still eats Somtam, much to my distress, every single day

Haha, and may I now refer everyone to the latest TV trending post.My original comment still stands and is reinforced here. https://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/945350-thai-police-visiting-foreigners-at-home-asking-for-yet-more-personal-info-via-new-controversial-form/

Three (3) foreigners were checked on out of thousands and that reinforces your biased opinion. Whoopee-doo.
