Excellent idea, Boo. They have all sorts of dogs and I believe are already sterilized and vaccinated.

They have t

wo shelters: Ban Taling Ngam:

Drive south through Nathon and turn right at the third set of traffic lights after Nathon – Route 4170 (1). Drive down that road approximately 4 km and you will go past the Elephant Gate (2) (on your right). Stay on the main road (i.e. don’t go through the Elephant Gate) and we are 800 meters after the Elephant Gate on the left (3). Go up the gravel path to the gate. You can open the gate and drive into the compound but please be careful not to let any of the dogs out. Close the gate behind you.

Chaweng Shelter:
We are about 3,000 meters south of Tesco. You will see the Bank of Ayudhya (7) on the left (yellow building with yellow sign) and turn left just after that (opposite Dive Supplies (8)). Go down that road about 600 meters and you will see the signs for ‘Dow Seafood’ (9) then ‘Will Wait Apartment’ on the left. Turn left up the road with the DRCS and ‘Will Wait Apartment’ (6) signs. Go up this road and ignore the dogs behind the gate at the top (these are our neighbors'’ dogs). Turn right into the graveled compound and our shelter is the first house on the left – our motorbikes will be outside and about 50 dogs inside. Please ring the doorbell. When you come in, please make sure the dogs don’t get out

i would say just pick a puppy off the street or from a temple, but you have to be prepared to take care of it's various ills.

they have dogs of all ages. There are probably breeders on the island too which will advertise in the local publications like community magazine but a street dog would be a better idea. At least from the Smaui rescue they have already been checked over by a vet & usually have all vaccinations.

I hate to be a party pooper, but heard many not nice things about this rescue centre. One friend adopted a puppy from there and the director said it had all its shots. The puppy got ill, and she took him to the vet. Despite spending Bt3,500 for medical, the puppy died of distemper.

It seems the centre does not quarantine sick animals either.

Just put the word out among your Thai friends, Martaway, there are always puppies around.

just in their defense, the puppy could have been exposed to distemper before it got its shots, in which case it does no good.... my puppy just died of distemper as well even though i had innoculated her against it- it was just about a week too late.

Agree with girlx & john 1. never heard a bad thing about them & considering the amount of strays & puppies they have to deal with it is possible this dog had no syptoms before it was rehomed, in which case i would hope jets friend let them know that they had a possible distemper outbreak?

unfortunately i must agree about the diseases in the shelter. especially puppies and not vaccinated dogs are prone there to get sick, and many do and die. as there so many dogs get there every day the diseases spread and it is almost impossible to eradicate these virusses which are very hardy, even with quarantine people can carry viruses around on their clothes and shoes. it is a losing gamble. when i worked there i saw that almost all puppies died because they get infected before vaccine can be given and starts to work. i took in many puppies from there then and still with lots of care some had to die later :D now there is a puppy house with seperate rooms but still diseases are hard to fight. most puppies only show symtoms after a few weeks, so a healthy looking puppy can get sick later.

it's best to take a dog from there which is older than abut 5 months and watch it closely! older, healthy looking dogs should mostly be fine but still can carry diseases and give to other dogs around new home.

i have some dogs here to give to new homes, all kind of ages from 7 months upwards and sizes and all healthy. but only to give to home with fenced or walled in garden :o

if you're interested pm me for my website with details of the animals.

edit: forgot to add that at tescos on the pinboard outside main entrance there are always puppies advertised, also at local vet clinics.

if you like a tiny puppy of about 2-3 months i would recommend to ask around your friends or check out breeders or even the petshop in baan makham.
