Police in the south of Thailand who fired repeatedly at a fleeing pick-up failed to stop it escaping.

The four door pick-up - believed to be transporting illegal oil - broke through a checkpoint on the Sadao to Hat Yai road.

After a short chase the pick-up crossed the central reservation and fled back towards Sadao.

Chief of Khlong Ngae police Pol Col Wirot Nuankaew said that officers received information that the vehicle in question was carrying illegal oil and a stop was attempted.

But the vehicle did not comply. However, despite shots being fired in an attempt to blow out the tires it escaped.

No other vehicles were hit or damaged in the incident assured the chief.

Unbelievable, this completely irresponsible and unprofessional shooting in public from a moving motorcycle, given the level of crime (carrying illegal oil) ...!

The Thai police playing the roles of "The Keystone Cops" was a laughable event many times ,but when they start using weapons that they do not have  any idea of HOW or WHEN to use changes the scenes of comedy to ones of a very dangerous nature..

Well, pick ups are the "SH*****" here on the Thai roads. If driven by a Maniac, you better say your prayers, bystanders, no kidding.

they didnt give chase. even the officers crappy lil cbr150 could basically keep up with a crappy hilux. He cant mono to endo hop the gutter? Needs gun, bike and police education!!!

Im not a trained police officer but could catch so many ceiminals daily without working up a sweat. Whats wrong with the police? Suns too hot, lunch time is in 5, still hungover from breakfast. Whats going on? Thai police should be road block experts. Its all they do!!

Since when does carrying illegal oil justify the use of deadly force? Totally irresponsible and insane, putting innocent bystanders at risk. Speaking as a former law enforcement officer and firearms instructor, that's just as bad as firing warning shots. Even if they did get lucky, do they think when the tire blows, a speeding vehicle is automatically  move in a straight line,  slow down, and then stop? They have no clue!

Kill somebody over oil smuggling ?   The cop should not have fired, unless somebody's life was in danger.  He needs to be properly trained as  a peace officer first, before he even handles a gun.  Reckless, but expected in modern day Thailand.

Yeah...as in the USA......

Moving bike, 1 handed shot, didn't possibly check back/fore ground for others targets..... How is this guy employed?

The meter box outside my place has a hole both sides where a cop apparently blasted away at a rapidly departing narcocar. I heard the gunfire upstairs, and ducked down as it sounded like the shells were rattling across the roof. About 10 bullets fired.

Doesn't quite beat the dodgy car import place across the road that had its plate glass holed by a spray of bullets from some sort of automatic weapon, fired by a pillion rider. Just a small selection of every day country life.

Pause for thought. Why do cops ride noddy bikes, while their sons ride big bikes?
