Thais travelling to Laos

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just wondering can a Thai travel to Laos without passport, and if so what about the ones under the age of 20 ?

need passport, no need of VISA

glegolo

They can get a border pass, just with their id card, allows them to stay for 3 days (probably 72 hours), but afaik at least officially they can only stay in the border area. I don't know about the age

They can get a border pass to depart Thailand and enter Laos that allows a 3 days stay in the area near the border crossing where they entered Laos.

It is applied for at a office near the crossing. All that is needed is their ID card or birth certificate and a fee of about 50 baht.

There is no minimum or maximum age to get one.

I remember bringing my GF there and she had a 3 days stays with her ID, that we then extended somewhere in Vientiane for an extra 15 days (had to pay a fee, can't remember).

Does anyone knows precisely about this process ? Can't remember the name of the office we went or where it was.

As far as I know a border pass can only be extended for 24 hours at a Lao immigration office.

Which process are you asking about?

The border pass can be issued at some travel agencies or at a booth or office near the crossing operated by the local Amphoe.

Very good question !

I'm not quite sure, what i remember is that i went to LAOS with my TH girlfriend who didn't had a passport at that time, so we crossed the border at Nong Kai with her ID and she had a 3 days "entry stamp" on some kind of A4 letter form.

Then we asked immigration how could she stay longer and they told us to go at some Government office in Vientiane (i don't remember at all what office that was) and they gave her an extra 10 or 15 days, my girlfriend said she had to pay like 800THB for this "extension" and we were all good when we left Laos 2 weeks later.

Anyone knows what i'm talking about !?

Short stay near the border: border pass 72 hours with ID card

Stay longer and go anywhere in Laos : Thai passport - no visa-  allowed to stay 30 days
