BANGKOK, 8 September 2018 (NNT) - Police arrested a suspected drug trafficker in Narathiwat wanted by Interpol and Sri Lankan authorities.

Deputy Tourist Police Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakphan confirmed the police in the southernmost province captured Sri Lankan national, Saliya Perera Wileala Arachchige, wanted by Interpol for the alleged drug trafficking.

Sri Lankan authorities previously coordinated with Interpol to locate the suspected drug trafficker. The Thai police had followed the case since they received a report that he had entered Thailand.

The suspect was located at Narathiwat Resident Hotel on 6 September 2018. Initial investigation showed he had entered Thailand in 2013 with a tourist visa, which he had normally extended its validity until 2016 when he became aware of being wanted by the authorities.

The suspect has now been transferred to an immigration office for further investigation and prosecution.

The deputy Tourist Police chief added the suspect is a member of a large drug ring wanted by the Sri Lankan authorities, and had fled Sri Lanka over the last several years.
