A pregnant elephant was found dead near Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi on Saturday. A preliminary examination indicated she might have died miscarrying.

There were no signs of injury, only pools of blood and next to her a stillborn infant elephant with placenta attached.

The animals died in the compound of the Nikhom Huai Sat Yai Cooperatives in Kaeng Krachan district.

Park chief Mana Permpool and veterinarians examined the bodies. Officials planned to bury the mother and send the baby’s body to Mahidol University for autopsy to determine what caused the miscarriage.
