When Rick Stanton and John Volanthen surfaced in Chamber 3 of Tham Luang Cave on day 6 of the rescue to find four people waiting for them they first thought they’d somehow found the boys of the trapped Wild Boar team. In fact they’d discovered four lost Thai rescuers who had been trapped by the rising floodwaters. In the chaos of the early days of the rescue the absence of the men had been unreported and so had not been noticed by the Thai authorities and or the outside world. What followed was a dramatic and unparalleled “snatch” rescue mission perfectly conceived and executed as they dived the four men through three sumps to safety.

Rick Stanton recounted the story of the rescue in a detailed one and half hour long lecture at Hidden Earth, held at Churchill Academy and Sixth Form in North Somerset, an annual conference for cavers organised by the the British Cave Research Association and the British Caving Association. Many other details of the rescue were also explained to a packed audience.

The Tham Luang rescue began on Saturday 23rd June after the Wild Boars team were reported missing and their bikes were found at the cave entrance. On day two searchers had penetrated around 1500m into the cave to the Sam Yaek junction, some way past Chamber 3 which would eventually become the site of the Thai Navy Seal dive base. The British Cave Rescue Council received a request from Thai government on Tuesday June 26th and by late that evening a three man team, Rick Stanton, John Volanthen and Rob Harper were en route to Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight. By this time heavy rain had prevented further searching. They arrived at the rescue site the next day and made a reconnaissance dive towards chamber 3, which was now cut off from the cave entrance.

Untold story of rescue of 4 Thais trapped in Tham Luang cave by British divers

Cave-Diver.png

Scarcely anyone knew about the rescue of four Thais trapped in flooded Tham Luang cave by two British cave divers days before they found the 13 Wild Board and their coach still alive inside the cave.

This untold episode of yet another rescue mission – low-key though but as dangerous – was unveiled to The Telegraph by the two divers  themselves –  Richard Stanton and John Volanthen.

According to The Telegraph Online on Wednesday, the two divers were totally unaware that there were four Thais trapped in the flooded cave besides the 13 Wild Boars. The four Thai adults were trying to find the children but had themselves become trapped by floodwater.

well all credit to the four Thais who tried to resue the boys before it all went to the massive effort.. They are heros too.. As for the Brit divers they are in my books god like in the selfless efforts.. And I dont believe in gods..

Right, no fault what so ever for the 4 guys, wonder if the official are aware as yet of this fact. They were probably silenced by some minor official to remain quite - can't have this sort of thing ruining our fantastic rescue effort.

In the UK rescue "clubs" sea ,air, mountain etc are run mostly by civilians and funded by themselves or by donation.. So this meeting that just happened in Somerset would talk about what went wrong or what could be done to improve future rescues.. This i feel wont happen in Thailand.. Yes they will talk about not going in before they/we are ready but it hapoens..

Just shows what true men they really were !

I'm sure the football team were grateful for the rescue but I wonder why the four men have stayed so quiet ??

Maybe a few words from the top..

Not a single whimper of gratitude from the four gits. At least I haven't read about it from any of the news-feed here. I wonder if they are just plainly ungrateful, or have been asked to shut up to save Thai face. Perhaps both.

They four guys may have shown their gratitude personally , face to face .

Or do you think that unless you have read about something, then , it didnt happen ?

I think, given the facts, it was unknown until Rick Stanton revealed them to a private audience, months later and then the Thais suddenly tell the story afterwards, that the Thai authorities had told them not to speak about it due to the ridiculous Thai "face" phenomenon.

Don't blame the 4 guys that were rescued for this, blame the pompous, idiotic Thais that were overseeing the operation for telling them to shut up.

Has that been confirmed or is that just something that Thaivisa posters made up ?

"Its about saving face" ,

I can't quite understand how the Thai seals got some way into diving in the cave before saying they had done all they could and needed help, surely they must have gone past the dry spot where these four were stuck without any diving equipment, who had got there before the water rose cutting them off, would be interesting to know if someone has more knowledge of this!

Obviously they didn't get very far at all. Don't forget that the Thai Seals had zero experience of cave diving, an extremely specialised skill.
