Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat has expressed support for the idea of granting double-entry visas for Chinese tourists to encourage them to return to the Kingdom.

Weerasak said on Thursday that he agreed with the proposal of the Tourism Council of Thailand Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) to allow Chinese tourists to visit Thailand twice after being granted an entry visa.

Weerasak said he would coordinate with the Foreign Ministry and other government agencies concerned to have the proposal approved and implemented.

The number of Chinese tourists has sharply dropped after a boat full of Chinese tourists capsized in Phuket in early June.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan then blamed it on the illegal Chinese operator of the tour boat service. His comment infuriated Chinese tourists who called for a boycott, prompting Prawit to issue a public apology.

One can only wait to elections. What a dIsgrace

Well every election I saw here things were getting worse, do you know something more than others? Or are we at the point that things can't getting worse, I doubt. Thailand is working to the point that N. Korea looks like the next holiday spot.

Was expected!

European and other tourist numbers are fading and with the crowd of tourists from China many such high value tourists are moving to other countries. Chinese influence grows in the region day by day. From Myanmar to Cambodia and Laos to Thailand they are moving in and acquiring assets wholesale. One must very careful to see what happens later.(case study for Nepal/Vietnam where the rising communist influence has now Chinese backed governments.  However its an option for every nation and Chinese offer loans sometimes without even interest for favours returned while other nations will not agree to these terms.

Thailand best partner was japan and might soon be ousted by China. India also faced the pressure of China in Mauritius which has majority Indians but Chinese are putting pressure on any Indian support to the past government thrown aside in a coup (which Indian intelligence believed was by Chinese backed).Again in Sri Lanka Chinese have taken over a major sea port by backdoor funding which now is a serious cause of alarm for India due to Chinese navel ships coming in to refuel.right on their backdoor.

probably in next 10 years 25-40% more of Thai business would be with Chinese investors and also land by proxy.Hope the Thai government and their think tanks can suitably defend their land and country from such economic intrusion which in long term can only cause serious problems for the local people. Good luck Thailand!

In time they could all become autonomous regions of China - like Tibet.

This singular action is perhaps the best insight into Thai psyche.

I think this move demonstrates Thai logic to a tee and how most Thai's approach problem-solving.

Normal Logic:

Problem: A boat capsizes with many tourists on-board - there are lots of casualties, human safety has been compromised

Cause: Shoddy workmanship, lack of maintenance and overall human negligence

Solution: Fine and jail those accountable, Implement stricter safety guidelines with regular inspections

Thai Logic:

Problem: Boat incident has scared off future tourists and caused a huge loss of face - but we want their money - how can we bring them back?

Cause:  There are too many tourists, more than we can handle - not our fault

Solution: Grant multi-entry visas to future tourists so they are inclined to visit more frequently - hopefully this will makeup for lost revenue
