Jonathan Fairfield
Prayut happy Bangkok voted top global destination Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is overjoyed that Bangkok has been voted the number one global destination city for international overnight visitors, Government Spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Saturday. According to the seventh Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index (GDCI) released on Thursday, it is the fifth time since 2012 – and the third consecutive year – that the Thai capital has grabbed the top spot. Phuket came 12th and Pattaya 18th. Sansern said Prayut would like to thank foreign tourists who voted for the three Thai cities. “The government affirmed that foreign tourists are special guests of Thais,” Sansern said. He said the prime minister wanted Thais to impress foreign tourists and make them happy during their stay so they would want to come back. Aj2000
If it's not broken, why are the Junta trying to change it, and erode the unique draw for tourists? There's nothing that Thai government have done for this increase, if anything they have deterred even larger figures. The erosion of the culture and unique attractions are being decimated. Point me to one policy or investment the government have taken where you can say it has helped with tourism? Nothing. Airports are chronically full, traffic at a standstill, the brilliant achievements of the BTS and metro were from other governments. Look at the billions that Singapore, Dubai are investing. This regime is thriving of a unique culture that ironically they are trying to destroy. The close proximity to China, whom are now travelling in their masses for the first time, the weather, has increased tourism numbers massively. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have also seen similar surges. The drop in European tourists is a clear indication the more discerning traveller isn't returning. That threat will also be from the Chinese, that eventually they will stop returning and seek other destinations. If the Chinese stop coming the economy would be destroyed, so reliant is it on Chinese tourism. More sanitisation, eroding the culture into a dull Chinese state will eventually hurt tourism. The irony being the Chinese are travelling to see something unique from their old bland cities, but this leadership is turning the city into an exact replica of a sterile Chinese city. But those at the top will be long gone by then, and very wealthy with the sell off. For now, they will buoyed by these numbers that the sanitisation process will continue, more street food bans, more reclaiming crappy pavements, and everyone in bed early. More soulless condos built from Chinese firms. Such a shame. Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

It does not say anything like most popular destination nor that all these arriving people will stay here. It was base on hotel occupancy which means everyone frequenting a short time hotel is in the stats.

Never met anyone who stayed 5 days at an airport!
