webfact
Customs nab gold smugglers on Thai-Lao Friendship bridge Picture: Sanook Thai customs in Nong Khai announced that they had arrested two people on suspicion of smuggling gold bars into the country from Laos. Suspicions were aroused when a woman in the back of a Mazda pick-up with Nong Khai plates was seen stepping on a cloth bag. Inside the bag were found two gold bars weighing a total of 5.2 kilograms that would likely have a value of 5.2 million baht. The woman admitted they were hers but the driver of the pick-up and owner of the vehicle denied knowledge of the gold. They were both arrested on smuggling charges. Nong Khai customs suspect the gold was headed for Bangkok. The smuggling is to avoid tax.
