When my mother got too old and ill to look after herself, I built an extension on my older sister's house and my sister gave up work to look after MAM. We built a ground floor granny flat which was self-contained. Anyway, she had cash left over from the sale of her house safely deposited in her bank. She used to sit in the chair in the lounge ordering things from online companies that she neither needed nor wanted, I realized it was because she was bored. On one of my trips home, she told me she was getting a 'bit fed up now' of charities asking for money because she was doing her best, but they kept asking for more. We found out she had been regularly giving 50 GBP here, and 30 GBP there, and 100 GBP for a one off over there, to all and sundry various charities. The sum was in the hundreds regularly. My sister hadn't noticed. She was too busy looking after MAM, running a household and she, herself, was a grandmother. Between us, we put a stop to all of them, but it had gone unnoticed for 18 months. When she tried to stop previously, she was bombarded with how much her donation meant, and who was doing without now her donations had stopped. Total emotional blackmail. If they were doing it to us, how many more vulnerable and lonely old men and women are they doing it to?
