PATTAYA:--Pattaya Tourist Police arrested an illegal Chinese tour guide for allegedly extorting customers for extra packages.

Li Wenyong, 33, and his boss, Pornpimil Senakan, 27, were taken into custody Sept. 24 outside the Pattaya Floating Market where Chinese tourists complained they were abandoned when they refused to pay Li an additional 3,200 baht each to enter the tourist attraction.

Pornpimil, a guide with P.P.M. Travel Co., confessed she hired Li for 10,000 baht. He was charged with working without a permit and working as a tour guide without a license. She was charged with employing a foreigner without a work permit.

The tourists, left with little time to continue their sightseeing, were assisted by tourist police, leaving them feeling a bit better.

Many will follow suit, as there's mucho dinero to be made from this, in the governments point of view, popular tourist group.

I am sure a tour of the Soi 9 RTP HQ would make up for it, reputed to beat the Tower of London dungeons tour.

These are the issues with the mysterious zero baht tours. Everything is made financially viable by kickbacks and extra charges. When the tourists do not buy enough at the various stops (gems, floating markets, etc) to cover the costs. The guide then has to extort the customers with demands for extra payments to cover costs and profit.

I guess the days of the quality tourist are no longer the focus - I'm guessing the difference between 'quality' and 'money making' was always lost in translation. The chance to make a buck is an overwhelming opportunity for so many - licensed or not.

Sometimes I emphasized with the guide of zero baht tours. Those tight fisted Chinese tourists should be aware that like all businesses, there must be some leverage for the business to go on. I had been on tours and try as much as possible to make sure the tour guides earned a living wage... if you want to be a skinflint, then it is better to stay at home, put on a ‘beachside’ videodisc, turn on the fan and lie down on a lounger and set about fantasizing you are on the beach living large!

It is getting more challenging to make any money from zero baht tours because the tourists are getting savvy. Tour companies normally make back the money from commissions from the stuff  the tourists bought from stores they were brought to. But savvy tourists now use the web to search out the best bargains and bypass the tours selections of stores... they even have the cheek to ask the tour guide to bring them to the store !

I am intimate with the details because some of my wife’s relatives are tour operators.
